1
The Wonders Of Water
  • By Cassie Krout and Ashley Caroff

2
Be careful there are lots of quizzes and fun
activities through out this presentation.
3
Learn more about the Earths water by clicking on
this hyperlink below.
Go to this web site and you can click on the
picture to the left and go to different
categories!
http//ga.water.usgs.gov/edu/mearth.html
4
More about the previous slide
  • On this site you can go around and explore the
    whole site.
  • Go around and explore to learn a lot more.

5
Earths Water
  • http//water.usgs.gov/
  • Going to this site you can learn about the
earths water! On this site there are also links
    to learn more about water.

6
Many Many Links
  • http//www.awwa.org/community/links.cmf
  • On this site you need to go to the left hand side
and click on the different links that you would
    like to use.

7
The Amazing Water Cycle
  • http//ga.water.usgs.gov/edu/watercycle.html
  • On this site there is an amazing description of
the water cycle, and there are so many great
    links.

8
Cohesion
  • When molecules of a substance stick together it
is called cohesion. This picture is an example
of cohesion. It shows how the molecules of a rain
drop stay together. Thats why they are shaped
    the in a sphere.

9
Adhesion
  • When water is attracted to other materials it is
called adhesion. This picture is an example of
adhesion, because hydrogen molecules are being
    attached to water molecules.

10
Heat Capacity
  • Heat capacity is the amount of heat per unit mass
needed to raise the temperature by 1degree
Celsius. The heat capacity of water is 1 calorie
per 1 gram of water equals 1 deg Celsius. Water
has a fairly large heat capacity.

11
Surface Tension
  • The molecules of water that are at the surface of
water are cohesion molecules, that have the name
    of surface tension.
  • Water pools into a sphere because a sphere has
the smallest amount of surface area.
  • All of the molecules of water are creating
surface tension, because they are holding each
    other together.

12
Thermal conductivity
  • Thermal conductivity is the ability to
transfer thermal energy from one area to another.

13
Hydrogen Bonds
  • The atoms of hydrogen stick to all different
elements that include nitrogen, oxygen, and
fluorine. This sticking together like glue is
called hydrogen bonding. We also found
    http//www.Isbu.ac.uk/water/hbond.html which
explains more and has great pictures.

14
Chemical Properties
  • Some water molecules are covalent and dont
    conduct electricity well.
  • Water is a very good solvent so many ionic
substances dissolve in it. The water reduces the
attrated forces between the anions and cations of
something and makes them break apart from the
    substance.
  • A substance that can dissolve in water is called
    an aqueous solution.
  • When a substance becomes iomized the
conductivity of it increases a lot. Distilled
    water is a great insulator.
  • Normal tap water dissolves salt so it is a great
    conductor of electricity.

15
Capillary Action
  • Capillary action is related to adhesive
    properties.
  • Capillary action uses a straw to absorb water or
    any fluid.
  • The molecules of both the water/liquid and straw
    are attacked together.

Quiz Time
  • Go to http//cyberscoolbus.un.org/waterquiz/waterq
uiz4/index.asp here there is a site that you
click around to learn about water. After you feel
confident enough with all the information take
    the quiz.

18
Quiz Facts
  • What we learned The worlds water is about 97.5
salt. To take a bath it takes about 200 liters. A
chicken that is 2 kg needs at least 7,000 liters
    of water in its life.

19
How Much Do You Know About Drinking Water
  • Go to http//www.epa.state.il.us/kids/fun-stuff/qu
iz/water-quiz.html. Here you can take Captain
    Bluegills quiz.

20
Safe Drinking Water Results
  • New things we learnedThat 95 of the earths
water is drinking water. On average people should
drink 6-8 glasses of water. Half of the worlds
fresh water is in Canada. Safe water to drink is
    called potable water.

The End

Water Poisoning
Before the poisoning!
