Title: The Fame Game

1
The Fame Game
  • Do famous people have the right to privacy?
  • When do paparazzi cross the line?

2
History
  • The term paparazzo was coined by Federico
Fellini in his 1959 film La Dolce Vita
  • In the movie, Fellini had a prying society
cameraman which he gave the name Signor Paparazzo
  • It comes from the Itialian word papatacci
translating to gnat and razzi meant to
    represent the popping of flashbulbs

THE Celebrity
  • Ownership- the pictures that paparazzi take are
pictures of other people without their consent
therefore they dont belong to the paparazzi to
    sell.
  • Reputation- sometimes the photographs that
paparazzi take taint the reputation of the
    celebrity.
  • Private Property- trespassing paparazzi that
violate private space of a celebrity are at fault
and should not be allowed. Pictures taken on
private property are a violation of celebrities
    rights to privacy.
  • Safety- the safety of celebrities is sometimes
put in the balance when paparazzi are trying to
capture the picture they want. One example of
this is the Princess Dianna Scandal.

THE PAPARAZZI
  • Celebrities and Paparazzi depend on each other
for business. Paparazzi take pictures of
celebrities to sell which in turn publicize
    celebrities.
  • Property rights exist to allocate ownership of
scarce resources to a specified owner. Thus
saying that it is only scarce things that are
    property.
  • It is hard to accuse paparazzi on the basis of
theft or damage to property or reputation when,
by the above definition, no property rights are
    violated.

SOME CASES
"I understand I'm a celebrity, I make a good
living, I don't ask anybody to feel sorry for me
and I don't expect anyone to. But I think that we
all should be afforded certain civil rights and
some of them are you can't put bounties on
people's heads, and have people try to jump in
your window for 300,000 to get a picture of you
and your baby," George Clooney
"I believe that when my children are going to
primary school, nursery or football school they
should be left alone. And they're not. And
they're not even with their parents. My eldest
son, Brooklyn, goes to a football school. I was
working at the time and Victoria was working, or
looking after Cruz, and paparazzi showed up and
harassed him and chased him into the football
school. This is a six-year-old little boy. For
me, that's crossing the line. And, of course,
that affected him. David Beckham
These are just a few celebrities perspectives on
paparazzi. Many celebrities feel violated by
paparazzi that intrude their lives by trying to
take pictures of them and their private lives.
