Parts of Speech Unit 1
  • The Noun a noun is a word or word group that is
    used to name a person, place, thing, or idea

Proper and Common
  • A Proper noun names a particular person, place,
    thing, or idea and begins with a capital letter.
  • A common noun names any one of a group of
    person, places, things, or ideas. It is usually
    not capitalized.

Noun activity
  • Think of the topic you are studying in SS.
  • As a group write as many proper nouns as you can
    in 5 minutes
  • Each member is responsible for answers.
  • One member needs to record the answers
  • One member needs to make sure the answers are all
    proper nouns.

  • The Pronoun a pronoun is a word that is used in
    place of one or more nouns or pronouns.
  • Antecedent the noun the pronoun takes the place
    of.
  • Ex. Kelly (A) went to the store.
  • She (P) went to the store.

Personal Pronouns
  • A personal pronoun refers to the one speaking,
    the one spoken to, or the one spoken about.
    Personal pronouns have both singular and plural
    forms.
  • EX I am sure he told you about their plans.

Possessive Pronouns
  • The possessive pronouns my, mine, our, ours,
    your, yours, her, hers, its, their, and theirs
    are personal pronouns that are used to show
    ownership or possession.
  • Ex. Mrs. Newmans cats are the best.
  • Her cats are the best.

  • Write five descriptive sentences about a
    celebrity without ever mentioning the celebritys
    name.
  • The class will try to guess the celebrity.

Reflexive Intensive Pronouns
  • A Reflexive Pronoun refers to the subject and is
    necessary to the basic meaning of the sentence.
  • Ex. We enjoyed ourselves at the party.
  • An Intensive Pronoun emphasizes its antecedent
    and is not necessary to the basic meaning of the
    sentence.
  • Ex. Joe himself bought a sandwich.

Demonstrative Indefinite Pronouns
  • A Demonstrative Pronoun points out a specific
    person, place, thing, or idea
  • This, That, These, Those
  • An Indefinite Pronoun is a pronoun that does
    not refer to a specific person or thing.
  • Ex. Everyone, Anyone, Nobody

Interrogative Relative Pronouns
  • An Interrogative Pronoun introduces a question
    what, which, who, whom, whose.
  • A Relative Pronoun introduces a subordinate
    clause ( an incomplete sentence, cannot stand by
    itself in a sentence)
  • Ex. Robins are among the birds that migrate south
    for the winter.

  • The Adjective an adjective is a word that is
    used to describe a noun or a pronoun.
  • An adjective describes a noun or pronoun by
    telling what kind, which one, how many or how
    much.

Proper Adjectives
  • A proper adjective is formed from a proper noun
    and begins with a capital letter.
  • EX. American football, Canadian mountains

Demonstrative Adjective
  • When this, that, these, those come before a
    noun or pronoun, they are called demonstrative
    adjectives.
  • Ex. This shirt is torn That store is new.
