Kindergarten is your childs first experience
with school!
  • Our goal is for your child to be
  • SUCCESSFUL!

18
Ways to prepare your child..
  • Let your child know that you are excited about
    him/her starting kindergarten.
  • Talk to them about all of the interesting things
that they are going to learn.
  • Talk to him/her about the new routine you will
    start.

19
Read Read Read Read Read Read Read Read
  • Reading aloud helps your child to build
    background knowledge!
  • Children whose families take them to museums and
zoos, who visit historic sites, accumulate huge
    chunks of background knowledge.

20
Give your child some freedom!
  • Dont do EVERYTHING for them.
  • Give them specific tasks or chores to complete on
    his/her own.
  • Teach him/her to manage their own clothing.
  • Kindergarteners have to be able to follow
directions and work independently in the
classroom. (keep up with pencils, crayons,
    scissors, lunch box, etc. )

21
Working with others
  • In kindergarten your child will have to relate
and work with others. Make sure that your child
is comfortable working in a group. Most children
who have been in pre-school are able to easily
adjust. If your child has not been exposed to a
group then sign him/her up for soccer, gymnastics
or a group activity that they are interested in.

22
Its All About Me!
  • Teach your child about themselves.
  • How to correctly spell and write his/her first
    name.
  • Parents name.
  • His/her birthday and age
  • His/her phone number and address
  • Body parts

23
Expand their mind!
  • Sing the alphabet song, put magnetic letters on
    the fridge,
  • Let your child count items in the kitchen. It is
also a great place to find items to sort. (big,
    small, more, less, size, color)
  • Have discussions with your child when he/she asks
    questions why? or how?
  • Ask your child questions about books or T.V. shows

24
Is My Child Ready To Start Kindergarten?
  • Every parent wants to know the answer to this
    question!
  • The goal of our kindergarten interview is to
determine if your child will be successful in our
    kindergarten program.

25
When is my childs birthday?
  • In the state of Tennessee children must reach
their 5th birthday by September 30th to begin
Kindergarten that school year. Many parents
question if they should send their child to
kindergarten if his/her birthday is close to the
cut off date. The development of children at
this age varies widely. Research has shown that
the chronological age of a child is not as
important as their kindergarten readiness. As a
parent these are a few things to consider.

26
As a parent these are a few things to consider.
  • Is my child on the mature or immature end of the
    developmental curve, educationally, physically,
    socially, or emotionally?
  • The kindergarten interviews are designed to help
    you with your decision.
