Elements of Fiction

• Young people, to build our intellectual capital,
  to get us thinking beyond the video world, we
  must put down our electronic toys and read. This

  for pleasure and to enforce what I think is

I. Character

• People, animals, or imaginary creatures that take
  part in the action of the story
• 1. Main
• 2. Minor

II. Setting

• The time and place in which a story happens.

III. Plot

• The sequence of events in a story.
• Keeps the reader captivated and interested.
• Generally, plots are built around a conflict- a
  problem or a struggle in the story.

• Man vs. Man
• Man vs. Self
• Man vs. Society
• Man vs. Nature

• Plot generally follows stages
• 1. Exposition Setting
• 2. Rising Action
• 3. Climax (Suspense!)
• 4. Falling Action
• 5. Resolution (Conflict is resolved)

IV. Theme

• The main message the writer wishes to share. It
  might be a life lesson or a belief about people.

V. Dialogue

• The written conversation between two or more
  characters.

VI. Suspense

• The excitement that involves readers in a story
  and motivates them to discover its outcome.

• The distinctive style in which a writer tells a
  story.
