Title: Poetry By: Lindsay Brown

1
PoetryBy Lindsay Brown
  • Target Grade Level
  • Grade 9-12, English

2
Objectives
  • Students will be able to compose a poem using a
theme of their choice and then use the recording
program Audacity, which was taught during the
previous lesson, and use it to record the
completed and edited poem and save it onto a CD.

3
Introduce the Learning Activity
  • I will begin class by engaging the students in a
    discussion about creativity (Traditional and
Technological) and by using first the traditional
method they will learn how to write and compose a
    poem.

4
Introduce the Learning Activity Contd
  • To further excite the students interested in this
lesson, I will then tell them that upon
completion of the written process of creating
their poem, they will have the opportunity to use
modern technology and record themselves reading
their poem using the Audacity program.

5
Provide Information
  • I would start by reading a poem that I had
previously written and stress the importance of
vocal elocution when engaging an audience. I
would then hand out a hard copy of the poem they
have listened to so that they can read along with
it while I replay an audio sample of the poem I
    have previously recorded using Audacity.

6
Provide Information Contd
  • Upon completion, I would discuss the poem with
the students, emphasizing the literary techniques
and elements involved in writing poetry, such as
metaphor, simile and style components. I will
also encourage them to use the procedure of
brainstorming to develop concepts or topics for
    their poems.

7
Provide Information Contd
  • I will then demonstrate how to write a poem,
allowing the students to verbally give me their
ideas on what to write or ways to write it this
demonstration will be a short poem, to be used as
an example. Finally, I will revisit the program
Audacity so that it is fresh in the students
    minds.

8
Provide Information Contd
  • Finally, the following website can be used in
order to aid students when trying to create
topics for poetry writing. The website provides
creative tips on ways to get started writing a
    poem.

9
Provide Practice
  • For the next two or three classes depending upon
student progress, I will establish working groups
of four students each, and keeping the same
groups for each class period, each group will
select a role that they will play within the
    group.

10
Provide Practice Contd
  • The roles within the groups are as follows one
member writes the poem, one records it, one edits
the recording and the last saves the work to a
disk. They will repeat this practice four times,
each time rotating so that every student in the
group has the opportunity to work in each role.

11
Provide Practice Contd
  • Though the practice is done within groups, their
task within the group is to be completed
individually, for example, the group member with
the task of writing the poem is to complete this
    by himself/herself.

12
Provide Knowledge of Results
  • As the students work within their groups, I will
spend time with each group and observe each
individual as they work and when required offer
assistance to each group member. Since the main
focus of this activity is the English/poetry
aspect, I will focus more on that.

13
Provide Knowledge of Results Contd
  • As the students write their poems, I will ask
them to read the poem and I will assist the
students by giving verbal feedback on what they
have done correctly and also what needs some
improvements. I will also list some ideas on
their work giving them suggestions on how they
    could improve their writing.

14
Review the Activity
  • To review the activity, at the end of the class I
will have the students verbally summarize the
main points in writing poetry. I will have them
explain to me, and the rest of their classmates,
the key components involved in poetry writing. I
will do this in order to remind the students that
the main focus and the important part of the
activity is the poetry, that way they dont spend
too much of their time focusing on the recording
    aspect.

15
Assessment
  • Assessment of the students is to be achieved by
having the students individually compose and
record a poem. Each individual will be
responsible for completing each task within the
developmental and recording process. They will
write, edit, record, and save their work onto a
CD, along with a hard copy of the poem they
wrote, which will be submitted to me for
    evaluation.

16
Assessment
  • The recording quality will only account for a
small percentage of each students final mark.
Much of the focus and grading will be upon the
quality of the written poem and how well the
student has used the various writing components
learned in class during the component of writing
    poetry.
