Early Years
  • Guru Nanak Dev Ji was born on 15th April, 1469 at
    Rai-Bhoi-di Talwandi (Pakistan)
  • He was the founder of Sikhism
  • He was extra-ordinary and different child in many
    ways

Gurupurab (Bday celebration)
  • Guru Nanaks birthday is celebrated on 15th
    Kartik Puranmashi i.e. full moon day of the month
    Kartik
  • The birthday celebration usually lasts three
    days.
  • Two days before the birthday, Akhand Path is held
    in the gurudwaras

  • The day prior to the birthday, a procession is
    organized led by the Panj Pyaras
  • They head the procession carrying the Sikh flag,
    and the Palki of Sri Guru Granth Sahib, followed
    by teams of singers, Gatka team (Martial Arts)
    display their swordsmanship

  • On the day of the Gurpurab, the day begins with
    the singing of Asa-di-Var (morning hymns) and
    hymns from the Sikh scriptures followed by Katha
  • Following that is the Langar which is arranged at
    the Gurudwaras by volunteers

    decorated with earthen lamps and candles
  • Local bands plays religious music, the
    enthusiastic bhangra dance (Punjab dance),
    giddha ( Punjabi Girls folk dance) and the
    colorful folk drum players add color to the
    festival
