Research Question
  • Hypothesis
  • The three different sections of Lake Munson (the
input flow, body and output flow) will have
varying sediment and soil pH. We believe the
inlet and outlet will be more acidic than the
middle of the lake because limestone from
underground could neutralize some of the acidity.
  • How does the pH of soil just offshore of Lake
Munson compare with the pH of near-shore sediment
in three areas. How does the pH of the three
    locations compare to each other?

4
Materials and Equipment
  • Oven dried, sieved soil
  • Distilled Water
  • Pencil or pen
  • 100 mL graduated cylinder(s)
  • Stirring rod
  • 100 mL beaker(s)
  • pH meter
  • Balance
  • Data Sheet
  • Gloves

5
Procedure
  • Collect the necessary equipment and calibrate the
    equipment.
  • Collect soil and sediment samples.
  • Dry the samples and sieve them.
  • Add 40 grams of the dry soil to 40 mL of
distilled water and measure the pH with a pH
    meter.

FIELD DAY! LAKE MUNSON )
  • On the 11th of March 2008 the group met at Lake
Munson to collect soil and sediment samples .
  • First we gathered the samples from the output,
then body and finally the input of Lake Munson.

Lab Findings Continued
12
Conclusion
  • Most Acidic Sediment (from least to most acidic)
  • 7.11 pH (input)
  • 6.56 pH (output)
  • 6.13 pH (middle)
  • Most Acidic Soil (from least acidic to most
    acidic)
  • 7. 24 pH (input)
  • 5.58 pH (output)
  • 4.68 pH (middle)

13
To conclude, out experimental results show that
the soil from the input of Lake Munson has the
most neutral pH, while the soil from the body and
output is more acidic.
14
And this would be Hannah after the fact.
