What are the properties of the Earths atmosphere?
5
Atmosphere
  • Life on Earth is supported by the ATMOSPHERE.
  • The ATMOSPHERE absorbs energy from the Sun,
recycles water and other chemicals, and works
with gravity to provide a moderate climate.
  • The ATMOSPHERE protects us from high-energy
radiation and the vacuum of space.

6
Atmosphere
  • Four distinct layers have been identified using
    temperature changes, chemical composition,
    movement, and density.
  • Troposphere
  • Stratosphere
  • Mesosphere
  • Thermosphere

8
Troposphere
  • TROPOSPHERE is the sphere of change.
  • The TROPOSPHERE starts at the Earth's surface and
    extends 16 kilometers (km) high.
  • The TROPOSHPERE is the most dense.

9
Troposphere
  • As you climb higher in this layer, the
temperature drops from about 17 to -52 degrees
    Celsius.
  • Almost all weather is in this region.

10
Stratosphere
  • STRATOSPHERE is the sphere of layers.
  • STRATOSPHERE starts just above the TROPOSPHERE
and extends 48 km (31 miles).
  • The STATOSPHERE is drier and less dense than the
    TROPOSPHERE.

11
Stratosphere
  • The jet stream occurs between the TROPOSPHERE and
    the STRATOSPHERE.
  • Temperatures in this region increase gradually to
    -3 degrees Celsius.

Mesosphere
  • MESOSPHERE starts just above the STRATOSPHERE and
    extends 80 km (53 miles).
  • The temperature in this region falls as low as
-93 degrees Celsius making it the coldest layer.

15
Ozone
  • The OZONE is between the STRATOSPHERE and the
    MESOSPHERE.
  • The OZONE layer absorbs and scatters ultraviolet
    radiation.

17
Where is the Ozone?
18
Ozone
  • The OZONE is made up of three atoms.

19
Thermosphere
  • The THERMOSPHERE starts just above the MESOSPHERE
and extends to 480 km (372 miles).
  • Temperatures in this region can go as high as
    1,727 degrees Celsius.
  • Meteoroids enter the Earths atmosphere through
    the THERMOSPERE.

Assignment
  • Use the student information sheet and notes from
this PowerPoint to create a model of the Earths
    atmosphere.
  • Your model must be to scale.
  • 1mm 1km

22
Assignment
  • You will be working with a teacher assigned
partner or small group and will be graded on the
    following
  • Measurement
  • Accuracy
  • Color
  • Detail
  • Neatness
  • Content
