Objectives
  • At the end of this module the participant can
  • Place an SpO2 device.
  • Configure alarms for the SpO2 option.
  • Connect the SpO2 cable to the back of the
    machine.

Select a Sensor Site
  • Choose a well-profused site
  • Ring or middle finger of non-dominant hand
  • Long or great toe
  • Avoid extremity with a blood pressure cuff,
    arterial catheter or intravenous line

Sensor Re-Usable
  • Place the patients digit inside the sensor
  • The top and bottom half of sensor should be
    parallel for an accurate measurement

The emitter and detector of the infrared light
should be vertically aligned Remove wrapping and
folk over finger, securing the wings in place

Sp02 Cable
  • Verify that the SpO2 cable is connected to the
    SpO2 port on the back of the

Connecting the Sp02 Cable
  • Whether using the disposable sensor or reusable
    sensor
  • Align the Masimo logo from the sensor cable to
    the Masimo logo on the SpO2 cable and click
    together

Turn Selector Switch to Monitor (Gray) Defib
(Red) or Pacer (Green)
  • Once the M Series/E Series is turned on, the SpO2
    measurement will appear in the left corner of the
    screen.
  • To adjust the SpO2 alarm, access the Alarms
    softkey and use the Sp02 softkey to scroll to the
    desired setting

Reading the Display
  • Pulse Oxymetry information is displayed in the
    SpO2 area as a number
  • Also shown are the state of the alarm and the
    signal strength indicator

Displaying the SpO2 Menu
  • By accessing the Param softkey, the menu will
    display the SpO2 option
  • Press Select softkey until SpO2 is highlighted.
    Press the Enter softkey.

Changing the Sensitivity
  • When the patient is exhibiting low blood flow,
    the sensitivity can be increased.
  • Press the Sens. softkey and then use the Sens.
    softkey to scroll through the options. Pressing
    enter will select the option.

Printing the SpO2 Waveform
  • Using the Wave2 softkey, press until the SpO2
    waveform displays under the ECG display
  • Press the Recorder button to print a strip chart
  • Press the Recorder button again to halt the strip
    chart printing

Factors That Can Affect SpO2
  • Incorrect sensor application or use
  • Dysfunctional hemoglobin (meth-hemoglobin)
  • Excessive patient movement
  • Hypotension, vasoconstriction, hypothermia
  • Nail polish, fungus, acrylic nails
