Title: Broadcast media

1
Broadcast media
  • Most techniques for editing print media also
    apply to broadcast media.
  • Newscasts are arranged so that items fall into a
unified pattern. For example all stories about
the same subject will be packaged together for
broad cast at the same time. The lead story may
be referred to again at the end of the broadcast
in order to tie the entire newscast together.

  • Broadcast also differs from print in some
    important ways.
  • The number of spoken words in broadcast can be
much less than those written for print.
  • Wire copy for broadcast may provide a
    pronunciation list of foreign words
  • No abbreviations should be used in broadcast with
    the following kinds of exceptions.
  • Common usage Dr. Smith, Mrs. Jones
  • Names of organizations widely known by their
    initials U-N, F-B-I
  • Time designations A-M, P-M
  • Academic degrees P-H-D

3
Television news
  • Newspapers can elicit sympathy with a story
and/or picture of a bombed out city.
  • However, television can take the viewer into the
experience with sound, pictures and words.
