Title: The Japanese Ema

1
The Japanese Ema
  • A talisman can be anything that is thought to
bring good luck or provide protection. The 4 leaf
clover, crickets, pentagrams, and crosses are
    examples of talismans.

2
  • The Greek word for talisman is talein, which
    means initiation into mysteries.

3
THE JAPANESE EMA
  • Emas are votive plates dedicated to shrines and
temples.Emas are also small wooden plaques on
which Shintos worshipers write their prayers and
    wishes.

4
  • The word ema means a picture (e) of a horse
    (ma).

5
  • The images printed on the ema tablets usually are
related to the shrine or to the animals
    associated with the Chinese calendar.

6
  • The Emas are hung on a shrine where the Kami
    (gods) can read them.

7
  • Most Japanese people wish for good health,
success in business, passing entrance exams
(school is very competitive), love, or wealth.

8
  • If their wish is granted, the Japanese people
return to the Shinto shrine to thank the gods.
