Title: A DNA sequence of Chlamydia, placed to music

1
A DNA sequence of Chlamydia, placed to music
  • Ryan Roopnarine
  • Cody
  • Sam

2
The sequence we selected
  • Chlamydia
  • Why Chlamydia?
  • Genbank does not have a spellcheck enabled
search, and we were unable to spell either
Gonorrhea off of the top of our heads

3
Genbank entry for Chlamydia
  • Indicates no distinguishing features for the
sequence of chlamydia that we selected
(introns/exons, et cetera), as indicated by the
/unknown in the features entry of our sequence.

  • An example of a sequence with actual features
    to it..

7
This creates a problem for us.
  • We dont really have any portions of significance
    to include
  • Very little of the sequence itself is melodic, we
would only be using 25, at most, of it.

8
How the tool (we selected) works.
  • The online tool that we used (Musicalgorithms)
takes the interpreted values of each chunk of
the sequence, and assigns it a numeric value
    between 0 and 3.
  • The numeric value of the song is then relatively
scaled into numbers between 1 and 88, which is
the number of keys on a piano. If A0, G might
equal 3 initially, but 88 finally.

9
Arrangement of sequences
  • Essentially, we made the sequence
  • gcgagttacg aagacaaaac ctcttcgttg accgatgtac
    cttgtagaa agtgcataaa
  • cttctgagga taagttataa taatcctctt ttctgtctga
    cggttcttaa gctgggagaa
  • agaaatggta gcttgttgga aacaaatctg actaatctcc
    aagcttaaga
  • cttcagagga gcgtttacct ccttggagca ttgtctgggc
    gatcaaccaa tcccgggc
  • Look like
  • aacaaatctg aagacaaaac aagcttaaga accgatgtac
    agaaatggta actaatctcc
  • agtgcataaa taatcctctt taagttataa tcccgggc
    ttgtctgggc ttctgtctga
  • tcttgtagaa cttcagagga cttctgagga ctcttcgttg
    ccttggagca cggttcttaa
  • gatcaaccaa gcttgttgga gctgggagaa gcgagttacg
    gcgtttacct
  • Where a0, t1, c2, and g3

10
Our desired result
  • Ultimately, we were trying to create an effect in
which each 10 letter base combination was a kind
of chromatic scale (a scale where all of the
notes in between two intervals are played)
  • Eg. B-scale (B-flat, B, B)
  • Each successive scale (10 letter group) would
    get higher in register.

11
  • We felt that if our sequence could not be of
aesthetic value as a piece of music, that it
could be of statistical value as such, as one can
somewhat tell how the pitch goes up as the song
    progresses.
  • By making our sequence into a scale, we were able
to create a song in which all of the genetic
instructions are preserved, as opposed to cutting
    segments outor repeating them.

12
Origin of our sequence
  • http//www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/viewer.fcgi?db
    nuccoreid62911037feature_62911037
  • Our sequence came about from experiments in which
a new method for detecting Chlamydia infections
    in pregnant women was evaluated.
