the north shore of Lantau Island
  • 4 times bigger than Kai Tak Airport
  • Opened for commercial uses in 6th July 1998

3
Why are Greenfield Sites under pressure?
  • Push factors
  • There are not enough land to build an airport in
    central urban area (or CBD)
  • There will be too much noise pollution which will
cause disruptions to CBD and perhaps make the
price of the area to fall
  • The land will be very expensive
  • Make create huge traffic in CBD therefore
    inefficient
  • Add not just noise pollution but also Air
    pollution
  • Pull factors
  • More cheaper and spacious land
  • Undeveloped therefore nothing needs to be
    demolished which saves costs
  • Efficient (Less dense traffic)
  • Less disturbance to other people
  • Easy access to Hong Kong Island and Kowloon

4
Development Whats wrong with Kai Tak?
  • The main purpose was to replace the old Kai Tak
    Airport.
  • General Info about Kai Tak Airport
  • -Surrounded by mountains and hills. Simply
speaking, one of hardest airport to land on
  • -Only 1 run way which was 3390m long
  • -Caused huge amount of noise pollution and
limited height of buildings built around Kowloon
    real estate.
  • -As Hong Kong developed Kai Tak could not hold
the additional flights coming in and so needed to
    be redirected.
  • Too far away from residential areas
  • Too close to residential areas
  • Traffic congestion
  • The airport was designed to handle 24 million
  • Typically went over 28 million
  • The airport ran out of landing slots and parking
bays, and flights had to be turned away.
  • Clearance requirements for aircraft takeoffs and
landings enforced a limit on the height of the
    buildings.

5
Development Chak Lap Kok Facts

to built a new airport which currently stands as
