  • What have we learned?

What?
  • At our first meeting at UNCW we were introduced
    to the book This We Believe.
  • This book reaffirms what we know as teachers and
    professionals at JCMS.
  • We know in order for our students to be
    successful we have to be a special kind of
    teacher. Our students are important to us and we
    are important to them. It is our responsibility
    and job to find ways in which to help and
    motivate them to learn.

What have we learned?
  • Even though we attend many workshops, we
    sometimes fail to incorporate the strategies we
    learn into our lessons.
  • To motivate students we have integrated a lot of
    technology into our lessons.
  • With the information we have been introduced to
    in this quest we have found new ways to help
    reach all of our learners.

So What?
  • The text we were given as math participants,
    Teaching Reading in Mathematics, is now
    instrumental in our classrooms.
  • The graphic organizers, especially the K-N-W-S,
    were easy to implement and use in our daily
    lessons.

Our specific favorites
  • The Frayer Model helps to focus on math
    vocabulary. It provides students with the
    opportunity to understand what a concept is and
    what it is not.

Another math favorite
  • Math isnt just about working out a problem, it
    is about reading the problem and figuring out
    exactly what we need to do to solve it.
  • Word problems are the most tested on the End of
    Grade test.
  • Students need a strategy to help them break down
    the contents of a word problem and plan an
    approach which will help them solve it.
  • The KNWS (K-W-L for word problems) helps the
    students determine the information they need in

Now What?
  • With the strategies we have been working with and
    our continuing education with the NCQuest group
    we will be able to further our student knowledge
    and understanding.
  • Our goal is to continue implementing the
    strategies and sharing them with our colleagues
    who were not able to participate in the NCQuest
    program.
