11
  • Making Science Work

Telemetry Integrity Monitoring over the Internet
12
Telemetry Integrity Monitoring Whats
Involved?
  • Monitor data, service or phenomena at point of
    use
  • Usually involves gathering large amounts of data
  • Only viable if there are no gaps i.e. 24x7
  • Must authenticate data in real time
  • Must be alerted immediately when something goes
    wrong
  • Must have the ability to easily grab key data
    quickly
  • Must have the ability to observe more detailed
    data
  • Must have the ability to modify integrity limits
  • Must be fully automatic
  • Must be cost effective
  • Results must be viewable with at least IE and
    Firefox

13
Moving the Cloud
  • Traditional telemetry or remote sensing is
    constrained
  • Manage large amounts of data
  • Over expensive or low speed data links
  • Needs unique software to analyse raw data
  • Needs expert users
  • Move the cloud and remove the problem!

14
Internet Enabled Telemetry Integrity Monitoring
15
The System
  • Three main System Components
  • 1 - Remote Probe
  • Application Sensor
  • Data Reduction
  • Limit Detection
  • Comms e.g. GPRS Modem
  • 2 - Communications Link
  • LAN or GPRS
  • 3 - Web Server
  • Customer viewable pages
  • Set-up pages
  • Database

16
Potential Telemetry Integrity Applications
  • Telecoms
  • Data traffic speed
  • NGN Sync Availability
  • NGN Speed Integrity
  • Navigation
  • GNSS (GPS) Integrity
  • Interference monitoring
  • eLoran Integrity
  • Environment
  • Space Weather
  • Air quality
  • RF emissions
  • Rainfall monitoring
  • Wind power
  • Generic Sensing
  • Remote data gathering
  • Electricity
  • Power Consumption
  • Water Utilities
  • Water Flow
  • Water Purity
  • Water quality
  • Pollution
  • Transport
  • Dangerous load tracking
  • Chemical
  • Hazardous substance monitoring
  • Security
  • Remote monitoring
  • Intruder detection
  • Proximity alerts

17
Application DemonstrationTelecoms Data Traffic
Speed
  • SyncWatch
  • Probe monitors relative time error between two
    telecom signals
  • Realised by a Technology Transfer Agreement with
    BT for time error Sensor
  • Data available on web site
  • www.syncwatch.com
  • Clients include BT, T-Mobile, TDC (Denmark),
  • Global marketing through Symmetricom
  • Forest of Dean electronic Coals to USAs
    Newcastle Silicon Valley
  • Evolving into NGN Data Speed Integrity Monitoring

18
Application DemonstrationGNSS Integrity
Monitoring
  • GPSWatch
  • Probe monitors GPS signals at point of use
  • Provides integrity for safety of life
    applications
  • e.g. airport, harbour etc
  • Uses multipath detection algorithms developed by
University of Bath under EPSRC Fellowship
  • Will leverage EPSRC Collaborating for Success
through People project - Safety Critical
    Applications of GNSS
  • Will be subject of GWR PhD bid for on-going
    research work
  • Will lead to Space Weather monitoring
  • Essential for safety critical operations of GNSS
    systems

19
Next.
  • We are looking for technology Mash-Up
    opportunities
  • With someone elses sensors and post processing
    algorithms
  • Chronos Remote Probe, Comms and Web Site
    Technology
  • Long Term PhD Research Opportunities with Bath?

20
And Finally.
  • UK Plc must take Science Technology seriously
  • ICT is not about how to work computers
  • Nor is it how to be clever with marketing
    websites
  • Nor must it be used for political ends
  • We should treat the funding of Science
Technology as they do in the USA
  • Its our natural home grown resource
  • Its our future ..
