Who Am I?

• I am large tree that is often used for Christmas
  trees. What am I?
• The Douglas Fir Tree

Douglas Fir Tree

• The Douglas Fir tree is the most common type of
  Christmas tree.
• The needles are 2-3 centimeters long.
• The needles are dark yellow-green and they are
  spirally arranged on the branches.
• Some larger Douglas Firs are 300 feet tall and 6
  feet wide
• Its one of the fastest growing species in the
  United States

Ethnobotany

• Needles were heated and placed on the chest to
  draw out pain.
• Bud tips were chewed for sore throat and sores in
  the mouth.
• The bark of young roots was boiled and drunk as
  tea for colds and babies were washed in it.

Fir Cones

• The Douglas Fir tree doesnt have pine
  cones. It has fir cones. A lot of Douglas Fir
  tree branches have at least two fir cones on the
  branch. The difference between fir cones and
  pine cones is the fir cones have pointy bracts
