• Otto Von Bismarck
• Came from Prussia's Junker class (made up of
  conservative land owning nobles)
• Used to be a Prussian diplomat to Russia and
  France until William I made him a prime minister
• 10 years later he became a counselor and used the
  blood and iron policy to unite German states
  under Prussian rule
• He was a master realpolitik

• Was architect of German Unity but wasnt a
  nationalist. He hoped to bring more power to the
  Hohenzollerns ( Prussias ruling dynasty)
• His first move as Prussia's prime minister was to
  strengthen the Prussian army

  needs of the state ( power was more important
  than principles

• Chancellor- the highest official of a monarch

• Seriously believed his right to rule came from
  god
• Confident in his abilities
• Shocked Europe by asking the dominating Bismarck
  to resign
• His government provided his programs for social
  welfare
• Resisted democracy
• Lavished funds on the German military
• Launched an ambitious campaign to extend the
  German navy

• Social welfare- the programs that helped certain
  groups of people.
• Kulturkampf- battle for civilization, lasted
  from 1871 to 1878 to make Catholics put loyalty
  to the state to loyalty of the church

  pants

  in his backyard
