Title: Supervisors Workshop

1
Project Susd
  • Supervisors Workshop

2
The Sus'd Programme
  • Sus'd is a sustainable construction programme
  • It is designed to work with other on-site
    initiatives
  • This programme is designed for Team Supervisors

3
What is Sustainability?
  • Money making sure the project is cost-effective
  • People making sure everyone works in a safe and
    pleasant workplace
  • The environment making sure we minimise any
damage to the environment in our work

4
What is Waste?
  • 17 water-logged bags of cement on a pallet
something weve all seen on construction sites
  • What is the waste?
  • Just the cost of 17 bags of cement?

5
More than just the costs
Slip and trip hazard
Energy used to make the cement
Cement leaking into ground water
Unpleasant Working conditions
Cost of transporting the cement to site
6
Did you know?
  • The energy needed to make 1 brick is enough to
brew nearly 2 pints of beer!
  • Would you pour 2 pints down a drain?

7
Dont Waste Energy!
  • If we waste a lot of materials, then we waste
    lots of energy used too
  • This can mean not enough energy to do other
    things

8
More than just Waste
  • Waste makes a site messy and a messy site is more
    hazardous
  • The HSE reported that messy working conditions
and poor housekeeping contributed to nearly 50
    of construction site accidents
  • Reducing waste contributes to reducing hazards at
    work

9
Reducing waste is sustainable development

Tool Box Talks
  • This programme is designed to help the
Supervisors in delivering the Sus'd programme
  • The emphasis is on the Tool Box Talks for the
    teams and operatives

12
Tool Box Talks
  • There are 2 main Tool Box Talks
  • The Hidden Construction Site
  • Got it Susd?

13
Tool Box Talk Formats
  • 3 Formats
  • A slide projection (see above right)
  • Or
  • A flip-over presentation style (see below right)
  • The flip-over format is recommended
  • Or
  • A pocket book

14
Flip-Over Format TBT
  • The team sees the picture on the top right
  • You, the supervisor, see the picture on the
    bottom right

15
Supervisors Hints
Bad practice
Good practice
Causes of bad practice
Root cause analysis
16
Pocket Book
  • This is a pocket book published by UCATT
  • It has the advantage that you can take it with
    you
  • It contains both Tool Box Talks

17
Hidden Construction Site
  • The Tool Box Talk is called the Hidden
    Construction Site because
  • We see these things happening every day, in fact,
so common that we no longer notices them, so they
    become invisible
  • The problem is that these invisible items hamper
our work and cause lots of problems and waste for
    us

18
8 Places to Visit
  • We have 8 places to visit on the Hidden
    Construction Site
  • They correspond to the Eight Major Wastes in a
    construction site
  • Often these are the most expensive items on a
    construction site!

Using this Tool Box Talk
  • You can use this Tool Box Talk in many ways
  • Each Waste as a single TBT discuss the problem
and use examples you encounter at your work to
illustrate the problem and ask your team to come
    up with suggestions for improvement
  • The whole 8 wastes as a general programme

29
Got it Susd?
  • This Tool Box Talk is about how we can improve
our workplace to make it safer and easier to work
    in
  • It is based on a before and after photos style

30
Site Organisation
  • Arrange the workplace to make it easy to work
  • Set everything in order so that we can get on
    with our work
  • Keep the workplace clean and clear of rubbish
    that may cause accidents

31
Site Organisation 1
  • Arrange or Sort out the workplace
  • This shows the dangers of having a messy site
    with tools and rubbish underfoot

32
Arrange
  • Arrange your working area
  • Temporary materials/ tools storage
  • Make sure cables, hoses are not causing hazards
  • Get rid of clutter and rubbish
  • Get rid of unused and non-essential items
  • Make sure your work area is safe and easy to work
    in

33
Site Organisation 2
  • Set in Order- everything in its place and a place
    for everything

34
Set in Order
  • Make all procedures and working methods as easy
    to use as possible
  • Make sure everyone and everything (tools,
information) in each area can be found easily
  • Dont keep spares and extra bits around unless
    absolutely necessary

35
Site Organisation 3
  • Clean Clear Up
  • Segregating Waste
  • By making sure we dispose of rubbish properly, we
make our sites a safer and more pleasant place to
    work in

36
Slide Organisation 4
  • No one likes to work in a messy and dirty
    environment
  • It increases your risks because you cannot see
what is underneath the mess and rubbish

37
Clean and Clear Up
  • Make sure you are working in a clean area when
    you start
  • Keep the work area and the whole site as clean
    and clear as possible
  • Clean and Clear Up means doing your bit to keep
the workplace safe all the time

38
Using this Tool Box Talk
  • You can use this Tool Box Talk in many ways
  • Each Waste as a single TBT discuss the problem
and use examples you encounter at your work to
illustrate the problem and ask your team to come
    up with suggestions for improvement
  • The whole set as a general programme

39
Asking Why?
  • If we start to ask why these problems (the 8
wastes, do something, bad practices) we will get
    some answer
  • If we ask Why? again (and again and again), we
will get to the Root Cause
  • If we tackled the Root Cause, the problem will
    not come back

40
Why does it happen?
Keep asking Why? until you get to the bottom of
it
41
Solutions
  • Every because offers a chance of solving that
    level of the problem
  • If we stop at level 3 (after 3 Why?s), then we
solve the problem up to that level
  • Ideally, we want to get to the bottom- usually
    not more than 5 Why?s

42
Root Cause
  • Sometimes we cannot solve it at the Root Cause
    level
  • No budget
  • Wrong sort of skills
  • Timetable is too tight
  • So we go back up one level and solve what we can

43
Wheres this from?
  • Root Cause or 5 Whys were also developed
    originally by Toyota
  • It was designed to eliminate errors and defects
in Toyota cars to improve quality

44
What to do with the ideas?
  • Once your team has come up with solutions to the
problems, we can log them and get on with solving
    them
  • All the hint sheets have 4 questions to help you
    develop an action plan

45
4 Questions
  • What can we do?
  • What is our solution
  • Who can help us?
  • Who has the necessary knowledge?
  • How do we do it?
  • What is our plan of action?
  • When will we do it?
  • When will we start and finish?

46
Lets log the idea
  • You have a good idea, lets do something with it!
  • The aim is to respond to all ideas within 1
    working week

47
Potential Difficulties
  • Do you see any difficulties with deploying the
Tool Box Talks with your teams?
  • The Hidden Construction Site
  • Got it Susd?

48
Do you have any suggestions on howto sort out
any difficulties?
