1
Daylight Saving Time
  • By Lisa Shusman

2
Reasons for Daylight Saving Time
  • To make better use of daylight
  • to preserve energy for war production by taking
advantage of the later hours of daylight in World
    War 1
  • Conserve energy
  • Safer travel
  • Prevents crime
  • It wasnt created for farmers, and it doesn't
    benefit farmers

3
History
  • March 19, 1918- act to preserve light and provide
standard time for the United States
  • Set to begin March 31, 1918 till the end of World
War 1 to preserve energy for war production by
taking advantage of the later hours of daylight
  • Repealed in 1919
  • Roosevelt issued year round daylight saving
    during World War 2
  • War time lasted from 1942-1945
  • Was not a law after 1945, but some places still
    used it
  • created difficulty for scheduling
  • The Uniform Time Act 1966 signed by President
    Lyndon Johnson
  • begins last Sunday in April, and end of the last
    Sunday in October
  • Energy crisis in the 1970s, Nixon signed into
law the Daylight Saving Time Energy Act of 1973-
extended daylight saving to conserve energy
  • 1986 amended to start Daylight Saving Time on the
first Sunday of April to the end on the last
    Sunday in October
  • August 8, 2005 Bush signed a energy bill that
increased Daylight Saving Time to the second
Sunday in March to the first Sunday in November

4
The Change
  • President Reagan made first change from last
Sunday in April to the first Sunday in April
  • To conserve 300,000 barrels of oil in April alone
  • Energy Policy Act To start it on the second
Sunday in March and end on the last Sunday in
    November
  • Adding two full months, one in the spring and the
    other in the fall
  • Complaints were made so the change is now the
second Sunday in March and end the first Sunday
    in November
  • Extends Daylight Savings day by one month

5
Pros for change
  • Energy use will be curtailed
  • Halloween will get more daylight
  • Longer synthetic sunshine
  • Use more natural light then electricity
  • Crime rate drops
  • Estimated that it would save 100,000 barrels of
    oil a day
  • Most of which would be saved through electricity
oil because of the less amount of light needed

6
Cons for change
  • Can hurt computers and electronics, older
technology are not prepared to update
  • Other countries feel they need to change as well
because of the economy that is integrated with
    the US
  • Airlines dont want it because of scheduling
    international flights
  • Farmers dont want it because of the impact on
    there live stock

7
Spring forward, fall back
  • 2 a.m. on the first Sunday in April we set the
    clocks forward
  • spring forward
  • 2 a.m. on the last Sunday in October we set the
    clocks back
  • fall back
