Recombinant DNA Sea slugs
2
What would you do?
  • One day your brother or sister or friend is
    peeing a lot.
  • Theyre also really thirsty.
  • What would you say?
  • Okay so then theyre still peeing and drinking a
lot of water all week and then they complain of
blurred vision and theyre breath starts to smell
    like acetone (nail polish remover).
  • What do you do?
  • The doctor tells you they have diabetes.

3
Diabetes
  • If you have diabetes your body doesnt make
    insulin.
  • Insulin tells cells to absorb sugar and burn it
    for energy.
  • Without sugar to burn your body uses fat while
the sugar lies around in the blood causing
    problems.

4
Where does the insulin come from?
  • We used to get it from animals but animal insulin
isnt exactly human insulin and side effects like
    rashes would happen.
  • In 1978 a company started using E. Coli Bacteria
that has recombinant DNA in it that makes it make
insulin for us like a little insulin factory.

5
Wheres the money?
  • One major supplier of insulin isEli Lilly
  • Fortune 500 corporation,
  • revenues of 14.6 billion in 2005,
  • 148th largest company in the U. S.
  • prozac, cialis, and were the first to distribute
methadone as an alternative for heroin users
    trying to quit.

6
Who else makes Insulin
  • Other major distributor is Novo Nordisk
  • H.Q. in Denmark,
  • production facilities in six countrieswith
affiliates or offices in 68 countries.
  • Employs 22500 people globally (as of 2005) and
had a turnover of 33.8 billion Danish kroner in
2005 (EUR 4.5 billion). They made 920 mil in
    2004.

7
Recombinant DNA
  • an artificial DNA sequence resulting from the
combining of two other DNA sequences in a
    plasmid.
  • Plasmids are little chunks of DNA that copy
    themselves.
  • Recombinant proteins are proteins that are
    produced by different genetically modified
organisms following insertion of the relevant DNA
    into their genome.
  • As this recombines the DNA of two different
organisms, the word recombinant is used to refer
    to this process.

8
What are sea slugs?
  • Molluscs without the shell
  • Interesting defense ability to eject their
sticky intestines out onto predators which
    grosses them out.
  • Also have stigners
  • Some of the most colorful creatures on earth

9
  • Recently the people who make insulin were trying
to use recombinant DNA in other animals and they
found that these Krotecus Snails could remove
human waste from water in a matter of weeks.

10
  • If you work at Eli Lilly as a scientist what will
you have to do before you can go to someone and
convince them to spend money on this?
  • Use the scientific method.
  • Observe, form a hypothesis with a prediction as
to how your experiment will credit or discredit
    your hypothesis, experiment, collect data,
analyze data, accept or reject your hypothesis
and let people know about it.

11
  • How do we know theyre alive?
  • Students will make a list of the properties that
all living things share. Students will share the
list and the instructor will write what they
    suggest on the board.

12
  • Properties of living things
  • Organization Cells,
  • Respond to stimuli in environment,
  • Homeostasis,
  • Metabolism,
  • Growth Development,
  • Reproduce.
  • Change over time or evolve.

13
How do you know you can trust this claim?
  • Critical thinking
  • Use baloney detection
