The revolutions in America France inspired
colonists in Latin America to self rule.

• Mexico 1821
• Columbia 1819(_at_ the time included Venezuela,
  Ecuador Panama)
• Argentina 1816
• Central America 1821
• Spain's former colonies modeled their
  constitutions after the US. Unlike the US they
  did not unit as a single country geography made
  it very hard.

• Self government was hard in Latin America
• Powerful leaders took control nations were
  unable to have democratic rule.
• US Gains Florida
• In 1818, Jackson headed to Florida w/ 3000
  soldiers. Spain protested but they were to busy
  fighting rebels in Latin America.
• In 1821 the Adams-Onis Treaty Spain agreed to
  give Florida to the US for 5 million dollars

• America was happy when Latin American nations won
  independence
• Europe worried Americans
• In a message to Congress in 1823 Monroe declared
  that the US would not interfere in European
  affairs.
• At the same time it warned European nations not
  to interfere w/newly independent Latin American
  nations.
