1The Civil War
2Beginning of the War
The war began in 1861, one year after President
Lincoln was elected. The South had been making
threats to secede from the country ever since his
election because they were afraid they would lose
their slaves. President Lincoln was known to be
against slavery. They finally seceded and the
war began
3Changes in Government
The government didnt make any BIG changes except
for the addition of the 13th amendment. It
abolished all slavery from the states. The other
changes were minor, but did have their own
importance. The South had to make the most
governmental changes because they had lost the
war and there for didnt have a stable government
anymore.
4Important People
There were very many people who played important
roles in the Civil War. One who is of the utmost
importance is President Lincoln. The other
important people were mainly generals for both
armies. A couple of important people were John
Pope, James Longstreet, and Alexander Stephens.
Every person in the states actually played an
important role in the war, because they were all
fighting for what they believed in.
5Issues
The main reason the Civil War was ever started
was the issue of slavery. The North did not
require many slaves because it was mainly
industrial, and the South required them because
tractors were not yet invented. They required
slaves to do the large amount of farming they did
on the land.
6Constitutional Changes
As in the government the only big change in the
Constitution was the addition of the 13th
Amendment. It stated that slavery would be
abolished from all the states. Other minor
tweaks were made in the Constitution.
7Events During the War
Many battles took place during the war, as you
might expect. There were quite a few of big
battles though, and they included the Attack on
Fort Sumter, the Battle of Shiloh, the Peninsular
Campaign, the Battle of Seven Pines, the Seven
Days Battles, Popes Campaign, the Battle of
Fredericksburg, the First Conscription Act, the
Battle of Chancellorsville, the Vicksburg
Campaign, the Battle of Chickamauga, the Battle
of Charranooga, the Battle of Spotsylvania, the
Battle of Cold Harbor, the Siege of Peterson, and
after the war, President Lincolns assassination.
8Economy
Changes in the economy were quite harsh for the
South. They had to give up their slaves, and
there for give up a large portion of their land.
Many of the large plantation owners instantly
gave up their land and moved to Europe so they
could reestablish themselves. The Norths
economy was not effected much, but their economy
had helped them win the war.
9Peoples Rights
The addition of the 13th Amendment to the
Constitution had a positive affect of black
people. They had gained their freedom, even
though they were still looked down upon by
whites. Whites had lost some of their freedoms,
like having slaves, but other than that they
werent very strongly affected.
10Technology
The addition of the Gatlin gun to our arsenal of
weapons was made during the Civil War. This
probably helped the North in a lot of ways.
Because of their industry, they would have been
able to make Gatlin guns while the South was
stuck with the guns they already had. The Sharps
Carbine was also added during the Civil War. It
was one of the first repeating rifles made.
This is a Sharps Carbine
11The Wars End
The Civil War was the bloodiest conflict in
American history. The South lost, even though it
had more people living there. The North won
partly because of their industry. In many ways
it was like the war with Great Britain, but this
time the rebels lost.
