5
Grading
  • Lab is 20 of your overall grade.
  • In my lab your lab reports are worth 40, quizzes
are worth 20, procedure is worth 15, and the
    lab practical is worth 25.
  • See my addendum for details.

6
Attendance Policy
  • Attendance to lab is mandatory.
  • Missing four or more labs will result in a zero
for lab. (see generic course syllabus for more
    info)
  • Attendance will not be part of your grade but I
will take attendance everyday and on your fourth
absence you will get a zero for the lab portion
    of the course.

7
Emergency Procedures
  • If there is an emergency you can notify lab
personnel or call 911, there is a phone inside
    the prep area.
  • Make sure to give the name of the college, the
location, room number, and phone number you are
    calling from.
  • Describe the emergency as clearly and calmly as
    possible.

8
Fire Emergency
  • Always notify the instructor of any emergency.
  • If possible, confine the fire we have fire
blankets, fire extinguishers, and a safety
    shower.
  • Evacuate the building if necessary.
  • A person with burning clothes should be smothered
    by a fire blanket.
  • Speed in washing a chemical burn is important!
Be sure to flush with plenty of water. Use a
    sink or the safety shower.

9
Chemical Eye Injury
  • Get to the eyewash immediately!
  • Thoroughly wash your eye for at least 15mins.
  • Eye injuries are easily prevented by wearing the
proper safety goggles at all times during lab.

10
Cuts and Abrasions
  • Always notify the instructor immediately.
  • A first aid kit is available in all of the lab
    rooms.
  • Cleanse wound using soap and water.
  • If you are bleeding, firmly hold a sterile pad
over the wound until it stops.

11
Spills
  • Notify the instructor immediately of a large or
    possibly dangerous spill.
  • There are acid and base spill bottles located at
each sink to neutralize a spill before clean up.
  • Spill pillows are located under the sinks to stop
    large spills from spreading.
  • If a chemical that needs special disposal is
    spilled, notify the instructor.

12
Disposal
  • Some chemicals require treatment before disposal.
  • I will tell you how to properly dispose of each
    chemical you use.
  • Properly labeled waste beakers will be provided
    for disposal if necessary.
  • Never throw a chemical in the trash or pour it
down the sink without permission from the
    instructor.

13
Right to Know
  • The purpose of the Right to Know Laws is to
inform the employee about possible hazards in the
work place. This can be applied to students in
    the lab.
  • There are six major components to these laws.
  • The most important to you will be the MSDS and
    labeling of hazardous materials.

14
MSDS
  • Material Safety Data Sheets
  • MSDS are kept in the lab prep area. You can also
    find them on-line.
  • They include valuable information about
substances you will encounter in lab.

15
MSDS Components
  • Chemical name
  • Hazardous components
  • Physical characteristics- density, boiling point,
    flash points, etc.
  • Physical hazards reactivity, flammability, etc.
  • Health hazards signs or symptoms of exposure
  • Primary routes of entry and target organs
  • Exposure limits
  • Precautions goggles, fume hood, etc.
  • First aid and emergency procedures
  • Name, address, and phone number of manufacturer

16
Safety Guidelines at CCCCD
  • Proper lab attire is required at all times!
  • Dos long pants or long skirts, close-toed
    shoes, tie back long hair
  • Donts shorts or short skirts, bare mid-drifts,
flip-flops or sandals, loose long hair, dangling
    jewelry
  • You are NOT allowed in the laboratory without
    proper attire!!!!!!
  • You may keep a pair of sweat pants and shoes in
your drawer in case you forget to come to lab
    properly dressed.

Clean-up
  • Students are responsible for cleaning ALL
    glassware used
  • All glassware, supplies, and equipment must be
    returned to its original location
  • All lab benches, counters, cabinets, drawers,
carts, fume hoods, and balances must be cleaned
    before you leave lab.
  • Failure to do so will result in points being
    deducted from your procedure grade.

22
Community Cabinets Drawers
  • Each lab bench has a community cabinet on each
    side.
  • All chemistry classes use the glassware in these
    cabinets.
  • An inventory list is taped on the inside of each
    drawer.
  • ONLY equipment on this list should be in your
    cabinetno more no less!

23
Community Cabinets Drawers
  • Cabinet Checks
  • I will inform you before lab begins that I will
be performing cabinet checks at the completion of
    your experiment.
  • If your cabinet is in PERFECT condition you will
    receive procedure points (extra credit)
  • If your cabinet is NOT PERFECT you will have
    procedure points deducted.
