Reasons for Car Seats
Read the pages, and pay attention to the words in
bold-face. (Darkened words)
  • Car seats are mandatory, and must be used by
children under 8 years or under 80 pounds riding
in a car. All car seats must be placed in the
back seat. It is recommended that no children
under 12 ride in the front seat of the car.

3
What is the best car seat?
  • There is no one best car seat. It is important
that the car seat has passed all safety
standards. Try not to get a used car seat. If
you find a used car seat, be sure it has never
been in an accident. An accident can weaken the
belts of the car seat. Also check that the car
    seat is not
  • too old
  • out of date
  • cracked
  • missing parts
  • missing instructions
  • missing a registration card.

Types of Car Seats
  • There are 4 types of car seats that you can
    purchase infant, convertible, forward facing,
    and booster.

Infant Car Seat
  • An infant car seat is the best for a new baby.
They are made to be in the back seat facing
backwards. An infant car seat is designed for an
infant only. They are made for children up to
20-22 pounds. Use a 5-point harness when possible
    for an infant.

6
Convertible Car Seat
  • If a child has reached 20-22 pounds but is still
under 1 year of age, they will need to be moved
to a convertible seat. A 25 pound 8 month old is
not safe in either an infant seat or in a forward
facing seat. The convertible seat is safe for
larger children under 1 year of age.

7
Forward Facing
  • Once a child has reached 1 year of age and 20
pounds, a forward facing seat can be used.

8
Booster seat
  • The older child, not quite tall enough for a
regular seat belt, can use a booster seat. The
booster seat raises the child so he/she can see
out the window, and the seat belt does not touch
their neck. Use a booster seat with high back
    for added safety.
