Title: Mercantilism

1
Chapter 3
  • Section 1

2
Mercantilism
  • Mercantilism is an idea on how the economy should
    work.
  • A country needs to accumulate gold and silver by
    having more exports than imports.
  • A country needs to have raw materials in order to
    produce goods.
  • It wasnt a good system for colonies with no raw
    materials.

3
The Navigation Acts
  • Charles II implemented these acts to help England
    exploit colonial trade.
  • The colonists could only trade goods with England
    which upset them.
  • The English merchants charged much more for
shipping and the farmers profit was minimal.
  • The Staple Act made all goods imported to the
colonies have to go through England with a huge
    tax.

4
Navigation Acts
  • Due to the problems with the acts many colonial
    merchants broke the law.
  • Due to this England created officials to monitor
    trade.
  • Massachusetts would smuggle many goods all over
the world which began a poor relationship between
    themselves and England.

5
Navigation Acts
  • The Dominion on New England grouped these
colonies together in order to monitor trade.
  • England took most powers from these colonies for
    punishment.
  • Freedom of religion was something taken that
infuriated the Puritans in the area.

6
Glorious Revolution of 1688
  • The Glorious Revolution was when William and Mary
replaced James II on the English throne.
  • The English Bill Of Rights abolished the kings
    absolute power in judicial areas.
  • It also required consent from the Parliament
before taxing or raising an army.

7
Glorious Revolution
  • The Bills also abolished cruel and unusual
    punishments.
  • The American Bill Of Rights would incorporate
    many of the same ideas.
  • Once word had reached the colonies of James II
end they destroyed the Dominion of New England.
  • The Glorious Revolution showed that revolution
against a king could be justified.

8
Glorious Revolution
  • John Locke wrote a political science book
    entitled Two Treatises of Government.
  • He explained that people had certain natural
rights that couldnt be taken away from people
    for no reason.
  • If monarchs took rights then they were guilty and
    should be removed.
