2
Question
  • Will the expensive brand or cheap brand pop more
    kernels?

3
Hypothesis
  • We think the expensive brand will pop more
    kernels.

4
Materials
  • 4-5 bags of two brands of popcorn
  • Microwave
  • Two large mixing bowls
  • Paper
  • Pencils
  • Calculator

5
Procdure
  • We tested a bag of Shurfine and Orville
Redenbacher popcorn to make sure it was fully
    popped.
  • We popped 3 bags of Redenbacher.
  • We counted popped, unpopped and added for a total
    kernel count for each bag.
  • We calculated percentages and graphed them.

6
Continued Procedure
  • 5. We averaged the percentages and graphed.
  • 6. Repeat steps 2-5 for Shurfine popcorn.
  • 7. We wrote results and conclusion.

7
Variables
  • Independent variable
  • Brands of popcorn.
  • Controlled variables
  • location, people in group, microwave, plastic
    container.
  • Dependent variable
  • popped corn, unpopped corn, and averages.

Data

Averages

Results
  • Our results show that all bags of
Redenbacher and Shurfine had between 397 and 446
kernels. The recorings are between 90 and 93 for
Shurfine, and Redenbacher is between 93 and 96.
Our data shows that Redenbacher popped an average
of 95. Shurfine popped an average of 91.
Redenbacher popped 4 more kernels than Shurfine.

11
Conclusion
  • We conclude that our hypothesis was
supported because Redenbacher popped 4 more
kernels on average. We believe that the saying
sometimes you pay for a brand name is true
because with Redenbacher popcorn we popped more
kernels, and its the more expensive brand. The
    cheaper brand, Shurfine, popped less.

12
Continued Conclusion
  • We also noticed Redenbacher had bigger
kernels and was tastier. If we could change our
project, we would compare light butter brands.
We would probably get the same results.
