Key Points on Hangeul.KR Service

• KRNIC launched Hangeul.KR service in Aug. 19,
  2003
• Taking registrations at second level
• ex) ??.KR
• Length of Hangeul domain name 2 17
• Allowed characters 2,350 Hangeul Syllables
• based on Korean Standard KS X 1001
• Reserved Words
• 769 (To reserve name space, mostly category
  names)
• 60 (abusive words)

• Sunrise Period
• Sunrise Period for public names, registered trade
  marks and company names

• Sunrise Period - 1st Stage
• Reserved Names for the following Organizations
  (about 13,000 Names)
•  - Governments - Education Institutions -
  Legislative Bodies - etc.
• Plan to preserve the list for one year

• Registered Trade Marks Three names could be

• Registered Company Names Two names could be
  registered per certificate

• Took registrations for six weeks and did lottery
  for one week if multiple applications were
  received

Registration Policy

• Sunrise Period - 2nd Stage
• 1 domain name per certificate (Residence ID
  number or Company certificate)
• Took registrations for two weeks and did lottery
  for two weeks if multiple applications were
  received
• After 2nd stage, First Come, First Served

Registration Policy

• Authorized Agency (Registrar)
• KRNIC is running 7 Authorized Agencies.
• KRNIC is running its own communication program
  and protocol between KRNIC and Agencies.
• KRNIC is charging the agencies 15,400
  won(including tax) per domain name.
• Agencies is charging the customers around 22,000
  won (including tax) price which varies among
  agencies.

Service Environment

• .KR Nameserver Service system
• Running zone files in Punycode
• Web-Navi system to help the resolution of IDN
• Introducing IDN-compliant software lists
  including VeriSign's i-Nav plug-in on the KRNIC
  web site
• Distributing code converter (Web, Windows,
  Unix/Linux)

Status

• After sunrise period, we started FCFS in Nov. 4,
  2003.
• The total number of registered Hangeul.KR are
  76,254 as of April, 2004.
• 31.5 of registered Hangeul.KR can access
  hompages.
• Almost 5,0006,000 queries flow through our
  Web-Navi system a day.

Issues

• More IDN supporting applications are needed
• Only a few applications support IDN
• Widely used applications like browsers need to
  support
• IDN to make IDN successful on the market
