Whats the big deal?
  • When we use information from any source, we need
    to clearly state where we got the information.
  • People who write books, articles, web pages, or
    even contributions to online discussions, deserve
    credit for their work and original ideas
  • Others can find the information we used, check
    our work, and trace the ideas we include over time

Bibliography vs. Works Cited
  • A bibliography is a list of all sources
    consulted.
  • It includes any sources used as background
    information on your topic.
  • A works cited page is a list of all sources that
    are quoted or paraphrased with in the paper.
  • It only includes those sources.

Which One?
  • Your teacher or professor will tell you which
    style to use for your project.
  • Each style has SPECIFIC formatting and

    important reasons behind them.

Generally speaking
  • Humanities courses prefer MLA
  • The sources used for the humanities may be
    ancient manuscripts, so the age of a document
    isnt as important as the history such as the
    publisher and edition
  • Science courses prefer APA
  • The sources used for the sciences should be as
    current as possible, so the date of publication
    needs to be up close to the authors name and
    title of the source

Putting it all togetherPunctuation counts
  • Arrange your sources alphabetically by authors
    last name.
  • Use a hanging indent (you can format it in
    Word)this makes the important information easily
    visible
  • Periods separate each unit of information
  • Colon separates publisher from place of
    publication
  • Commas indicate items in a series
  • Parenthesis indicates volume

Details Count
  • Make sure that all sources are correctly
    identified
  • Follow style manuals exactly
  • Using the ideas of others is perfectly fine if
    you clearly give them credit for their work
