Linguistically Appropriate Services in Health
Care (CLAS)

• Health care organizations and nurses should
  promote and support the attitudes, behaviors,
  knowledge, and skill necessary for staff to work
  respectfully and effectively with clients and
  each other in a culturally diverse work
  environment (OMH, 2001)

• Culture - nonphysical traits such as values,
  belief, attitudes, and customs that are shared by
  a group of people and are passed from one
  generation to the next (Spector, 2000)
