2PURPOSE
The Claremont Educational Partnership is a
commitment to enhance the educational process in
Claremont by participation in shared and
mutually beneficial activities between and among
the Claremont Colleges and the Claremont Unified
School District
3PRIORITIES for 2000-2001
- Improve Communication between College Faculty and
School District Faculty - Expand Public Relations efforts of the
Partnership - Continue Orientations and Campus Visits
- Pursue Collaborative Grant Initiatives
- Continue Tutoring, Mentoring and Intern programs
- Expand Collaboration in Science
- Promote Health Education efforts
- Enhance Ongoing Activities

6Communications/Public Relations
- Improve Communications between College Faculty
and School District Faculty - Collegial sharing between Pomona College
professors and foreign language teachers at CHS,
including information on the colleges use of
technology in foreign language instruction
- Expand Public Relations efforts of the
Partnership - Annual Report and Partners newsletter given
widespread distribution- over 65 community
organizations, businesses and individuals- all
teachers in CUSD - staff and faculty at all
colleges - Educational Partnership activities are posted on
the CUSD website

- Continue Orientations and Campus Visits
- 4th grade students from Mtn. View Elementary
School spent a day at CMC - 2nd grade students from Oakmont Elementary School
visited Pitzer College - 35 students from El Roble Intermediate School
attended Alumni Day at Pitzer College - Pitzer College Director of Financial Aid
presented a financial aid workshop for parents at
CHS, December 2000 - Pitzer College Director of Financial Aid
participated in presentation to parents at CHS,
February 2001 - Scripps College Assistant Director of Admission
conducted Parent-College Information Night at
CHS, October 2000 - College Bound Saturday School, run by Pomona
College, provided tutoring, mentoring and college
orientation to students and parents - College tours and financial aid information were
available to students and parents throughout the
year

- Pursue Collaborative Grant Initiatives
- CUSD wrote a letter of support for America Reads
and America Counts to the new Chairman of the
Corporation for National Service, as suggested by
Campus Compact - Claremont University Consortium contributed a
Memorandum of Understanding tothe successful
application of CUSD for a Healthy Start
operational grant - CUSD applied for and received a grant from AOL to
develop a web page for LEEP(Leadership in
Environmental Education Partnership)

- Continue Tutoring, Mentoring and Intern Programs
- CUSD teachers and counselors provided mentoring
in education and guidance servicesto college
students - College students participated in intern programs
at Claremont High School - CUSD teachers invited education students to
observe in their classrooms - America Reads tutors were active in all
elementary schools - America Counts tutors participated at two
elementary schools - Kravis Leadership Institute mentoring program
continued at El Roble Intermediate School - Harvey Mudd students offered math tutoring on
campus to CHS and El Roble students - Scripps College student organized tutors for El
Roble Intermediate School - Pitzer College, in collaboration with CUSD,
organized tutoring sessions at two
subsidizedapartment complexes, recruiting
student tutors and expanding programs for
families - College students volunteered as mentors in
Community Day School - Work-study student coordinated the hiring and
scheduling of 25 work-study students at Sycamore
Elementary School - College students continued a math program at
Sycamore Elementary School - College interns developed and taught a
supplemental program in art history and
languageacquisition for English Language

- Expand Collaboration in Science
- Elementary school students visited KGI
laboratories to do an experiment on polymers - Architects and teachers from CUSD toured KGI
science labs, December 2000 - Vista del Valle, Mountain View, Sycamore, Danbury
and Sumner Elementary Schools participated in
Leadership in Environmental Education Partnership
at Bernard Field Station - College professors assisted with science fairs
and served as science fair judges - Harvey Mudd Engineering Clinic had a project at
Danbury Elementary School to design waterproof
casts and other adaptive equipment. - Joint science professor organized college
students to provide supplemental science
lessonsat elementary schools
- Promote Health Education efforts
- Healthy Start Program Reception held at Smith
Campus Center, Pomona College, April 2001 - School psychologist retreat held at Smith Campus
Center, Pomona College, November 2000 - Colleges/CUSD began exploring community outreach
program to enroll families in Medi-Cal and
Healthy Families insurance programs

- Volunteer Activities
- CUSD teachers spoke with college classes
- CUSD Volunteer Coordinator attended Pitzer
College Community Programs Fair - Over 80 college students volunteered and assisted
on all campuses as tutors, counselors,mentors
and coaches, both in classrooms and after-school
child care - Cooperative program with Shoes That Fit at
several schools - Pomona College professor presented lecture on
King Lear for English classes at CHS - CHS and Sycamore students helped set up and
docent at the Montgomery Art Gallery exhibit - Circle K Club organized crafts for elementary
schools - College student organized a community service
project for Sycamore Elementary students
- Information/Library Technology
- Honnold/Mudd Library resources continued to be
available to CUSD students, faculty and staff - 47 CHS students were trained in use of college
library resources and received library cards - Claremont Colleges continued to provide Internet
gateway access for school district networks - Computer classes offered by CUSD were available
to the community

- Visual and Performing Arts
- Claremont High School, with support from CUC and
the Claremont Colleges Theaterprogram, hosted
the California State Thespian Festival at Bridges
Auditorium and Seaver Theater complex for the
second year, February 2001 - Mountain View, Oakmont, Sycamore and Vista del
Valle Elementary Schools music programsheld at
Garrison Theater - El Roble Jazz concert held at Garrison Theater,
March 2001 - CUSD after-school music program concerts held in
Garrison Theater in February, May 2001 - CHS Sweet Charity production involving 175
students, held at Bridges Auditorium, May 2001 - Elementary school students visited Montgomery Art
Gallery - Elementary school students attended childrens
programs at Bridges Auditorium - Elementary school students attended noon concerts
at Balch Auditorium - Claremont School of Theater Arts continued to
offer summer program at Pomona College - Chaparral Elementary School classes took
walking/sketching tours of Margaret Fowler Garden
and Montgomery Art Gallery

- International Cross-Cultural Understanding
- Members of CHS Interact Club assisted at the
International Festival - International students gave presentations at
Sycamore Multicultural Day - International Place provided International
Festival tickets to CHS and San Antonio High
School students - CHS German classes visited Scripps College for
German art, music and poetry day - Elementary school students attended American Sign
Language luncheon and multicultural lunches at
the Oldenborg Center and International Place - Sycamore Elementary School students attended
International Place luncheon recognizing U.N. Day

Claremont Graduate University - East San Gabriel Valley Educational Consortium
(ESGVEC) seminar held at Albrecht Auditorium,
October 2000 - SELPA training sessions held in Albrecht
Auditorium, November and December 2000 - CUSD Technology Training seminar held in Burkle
Building, CGU, September 2000 - DARE graduation held at Garrison Theater,
February 2001 and Bridges Auditorium, June 2001 - El Roble awards ceremony held at Bridges
Auditorium, May 2001 - CUSD Leadership Association awards program held
in McConnell Dining Hall, May 2001 - CHS graduation held on Pomona College Merritt
Field - CHS football game held at Pomona College
- Oakmont Elementary School reception held at
McConnell Center, Pitzer College - Summer School Teacher orientation held at Burkle
Building, CGU - Colleges make grounds equipment available to the
school district - Colleges donate furniture and equipment to CUSD
- CUSD schools used college facilities for student
and staff workshops - Elementary schools held year-end parties on
college campuses

college research projects - CMC track coach and students assisted with Vista
del Valle track meet - CMC guest, the Tufts Poetry Award winner, spoke
to CHS English classes - Staff at Rancho Santa Ana Botanic Garden provided
training in environmental educationto Pitzer
students leading the LEEP program for CUSD
students - Claremont Work-Ability made job placements at the
Colleges and RSABG - CHS students enrolled in 29 courses at The
Colleges - Elementary school classes visited Rancho Santa
Ana Botanic Garden - Historical walking tours for third grade classes
included the Claremont Colleges - Elementary school teachers and administrators
make presentations and participate in Claremont
Reading Conference sponsored by CGU - CUSD staff and high school students attended
