Bayard Rustin, civil rights activist
Chief organiser of the 1963 March on Washington
and assistant to Martin Luther King, who gave his
"I have a dream" speech at that march.
Civil rights leaders were concerned that Rustins
homosexuality and prison term as a conscientious
objector during WW2 might be used to discredit
the march. So he asked A. Philip Randolph to be
the march's official head. Randolph kept him on
as chief organiser.
