Background
  • As part of the NHS Cancer Plan a
  • commitment was given to develop education
  • and support programmes for district nurses in
  • the principles and practice of palliative
    care.
  • 10m was allocated centrally over three years
    (2001-2004) was allocated for the project
  • Cancer networks developed locally driven and
    clinically focussed programmes.

  • The content criteria was agreed centrally.
  • Flexible locally agreed approach to the programme
  • Focused initially on G grade DNs.
  • Locally agreed targets for numbers of nurses
    completing the programme
  • Programme extended to other grades when all G,
    grades had completed.

  • Locally each ICN received 7k per year to
    develop, run and evaluate the programme.
  • A full time Education Facilitator was appointed
    to support the programme and a steering group was
    formed
  • Each ICN had a named lead for liaison and
    coordination purposes.

  • Education programmes continued in each ICN
  • Overall co-ordination was poor
  • SPC CNG resolved to form a sub group to take this
    work forward

    education across the CNG

    management of the DN education programme

    resources
