Where does it come from?

• Literally means Third Rhyme in Italian
• First used by Dante in the Divine Comedy
• considered the central epic poem of Italian
  literature
• Became very popular with other Italian poets.
• The use of the number 3 in the terza rima
  suggests the Holy Trinity

What is a Terza Rima?

• A poem that uses an interlocking rhyme scheme
  like a chain, or waterfall effect
• Each section of the poem is broken up into three
  lines
• Each set uses the rhyme sound from the previous
  set
• ABA BCB CDC etc

Acquainted With the Night Robert Frost

• I have been one acquainted with the night.
• I have walked out in rainand back in rain.
• I have outwalked the furthest city light.
• I have looked down the saddest city lane.
• I have passed by the watchman on his beat
• And dropped my eyes, unwilling to explain.
• I have stood still and stopped the sound of feet
• When far away an interrupted cry
• Came over houses from another street,
• But not to call me back or say good-by
• And further still at an unearthly height
• One luminary clock against the sky
• Proclaimed the time was neither wrong nor right.
• I have been one acquainted with the night.

• Pick a topic because Terza Rimas are Italian,
  Im
• going to do mine on FOOD!
• Create the first stanza using ABA rhyme scheme.
• Your next stanza should have BCB rhyme scheme.
• Your third stanza should have CDC rhyme scheme,
  or if you want to be fancy, CAC rhyme scheme
• You must have at least THREE stanzas!

• I love pizza, hoagies and spaghetti
• Mozzarella, bruchetta or garlic bread
• It doesnt matter, as long as its ready
• I love Italian food, Ill eat it till Im dead
• Who cares if its good for you,
• Its a feast that makes you well fed.
• When you eat, take time to chew,
• Use your napkin and hold your fork steady.
• Italian food, my love for you is true
