Title: Travel Behavior and DecisionMaking

1
Travel Behavior andDecision-Making
  • Dr. Michael A. McAdamsGeography DepartmentFatih

2
Travel Behavior
  • directly linked to land use
  • Key components of travel demand behavior are
    activity centersactivitiessocio-economic
    characteristicstime
  • Land use changes and travel behavior can greatly
    influence travel demand

3
Relationship between urban activity systems and
transportation system
4
Individual Travel Decision Making
  • This is called the disaggregate approach
  • Where are people going?
  • How often are the going?
  • What time are they going
  • What is the purpose of the trip?
  • What mode of transportation are they
    usingautomobile, truck, bus, light rail,
    walking, bicycle

5
Travel Diaries
  • Questionnaire asking related questions to where,
    when, why, how
  • With the use of GPS, the need for travel diaries
    may be soon eliminated
  • See the following paper

6
Land Use Classification, trip and purpose using
GIS
7
Origin Destination Studies
  • Very extensive survey of a sample of drivers
  • Demographics and questions related to their trip
    purpose, location, time, mode etc.
  • Many done in the 1960s, but enough gathered that
    is now not done often
  • An interesting paper

8
Value of Time/Travel Cost
  • Different socio-economic groups value time
    differently
  • Trip purposes may value trips differently
  • Trip purposes by modes may be valued differently
  • Logit probability models are constructed from
findings related to value of time
  • Article related to recreational trips and value
    of time

9
Exercise
  • For the last three days, report what purpose,
when, what route you took trips
  • Each individual will report to class after 10
    mintues

10
Conclusion
  • Travel behavior and land use is the building
blocks for travel demand modeling and
    transportation planning
  • The problem is that this changes over time
and impossible to predict in the future
  • Travel behavior is often used in mass
    transportation research, travel demand
    management, corridor congestion managenement,
    energy consumption, etc.
