  • Searching techniques, retrieval and downloading
    results.
  • Locating E-Journals by title.
  • Internet Guides for Business Management
  • Evaluation and Citation of sources.

  • Be able to access electronic resources on or off
    campus.
  • Have the search skills necessary to use the
    subject databases
  • Be able to use internet subject portals to
    retrieve quality web sources.
  • Be able to evaluate and cite your sources
    appropriately
  • Know who to contact for more help.

Access to Databases
  • Almost all are available on or off campus
  • Athens authentication required for most databases
    off-campus
  • Separate passwords required for the rest
  • Not to be confused with Single Sign-on login

Search Strategies
  • Think of synonyms (alternative words) for your
    topic heading
  • Use AND, OR, NOT and ( ) connectors to link
    multiple keywords
  • Each database uses truncation and wildcards
  • Each database has similarities but each has
    particular strengths or weaknesses

  • Largest full-text database for business
    information
  • 1,185 active titles - 750 are full-text
  • Academic professional/trade journals
  • Has a strong American bias

European Business ASAP
  • Over 130 full text titles - some overlap with ABI
  • Mixture of academic and trade journals
  • Complements ABIs American bias - good for
    UK/Irish company information

Emerald Fulltext
  • 120 titles from the publisher MCB (90 academic)
  • Particularly good for management information
  • Useful assistance grading or rating articles
  • Can be broken down by article type e.g.
    survey, comparative, literature review etc.

Locating Full Text Electronic Journals by Title
  • 6,000 full text journals from 100 databases
    rearranged into alphabetical order.
  • Accessed through the Library Homepage

Two search options
  • Titles beginning with
  • allows you to search by either the first word(s)
    or full title of the journal.
  • No abbreviations may be used
  • Titles Containing
  • Useful, if not sure of the correct title.
  • Helps identify other journals on the same subject
  • BUT! Relevant journals without the keyword will
    not be displayed.

  • Quality sources help produce good quality work
    ( higher grades).
  • Search engines produce good and bad hits.

Why worry about Citation?
  • Poor citation skills lose marks
  • Incomplete/wrong citations prevent further
    research.
