Title: Lightning

1
Lightning
  • Why it happens.

Next
2
How clouds forms
  • A cold air mass forces its way in on a warm air
    mass.
  • The warm air mass is lighter and it moves upward.
  • The warm air mass is full of water vapor from
evaporation of water from dew, ponds, lakes and
    rivers.
  • The water vapor combines with particles in the
air. The more in the air a cloud forms

Next
3
What happens
  • Particles in the cloud collide with each other
causing electrons to be knocked from the atom
    making up the particle.
  • this causes the particle to become negatively
charged. And fall to the bottom of the cloud.
  • The electron that was knocked off becomes
positively charged and rise upward in the cloud

Next
4
How lightning forms
  • The Great of negative charged particles at the
bottom of the cloud repel the negative charges on
    the ground
  • This causes the earth surface under the cloud to
    be positively charged.
  • Opposing charges attract to each other forcing a
path through the air toward the ground. A
    lightning stroke.

Lightning continued.
  • The electrons (lightning stroke) are moving at
    thousands of miles per hour.
  • As the electrons move to the earth they collide
with other particles as they did in the could and
create a chain reaction until it reaches the
    earth
  • The colliding of the molecules to the earth
    creates light.
  • The movement of the molecules also move the air
around the path. This movement creates a sound.
    Thunder.
  • Sense light travels faster than sound we see the
lightning before we hear the thunder, even though
they happen at the same time.

Quiz
  • Can you have thunder with out lightning?
  • A Yes.
  • B No.
  • C Some times.
  • D Depends on how big the cloud is.

7
