Setting the Scene - Demographics

• When HM Queen came to the throne in 1952, she
  sent 100 telegrams to people who had reached the
  age of 100. Today she sends 9,000. In 2031 it is
  estimated she (or her successor) will send
  40,000.
• Older population increasing rapidly
• In Wales and England increase of 51 in
  population of over 65 between 1961-2001.
  Increasing still.
• Proportion of population aged over 60 now
  accounts for 1 in 4 people in Wales.
• Wales has higher proportion of older people than
  other UK countries
• over 11,000 more people with dementia, a 30
  rise, between 2007 and 2021.
