How the name Maryland became
  • Maryland was named after a queen named Mary.
  • She was the queen of England.

State Things
  • The state bird is called Baltimore Oriole.
  • The nickname that Maryland used to be was Old
    Line State.
  • The state flower is the Black eyed Susan.

  • The capital of Maryland is Annapolis. The biggest
    cities are the Baltimore, Federick, Gaithers
    berg, Bowie, Rockville, Haqerstown, College Park,
    Salisbury, Cumerland.

    schools and all the other schools like colleges
    and universities.

    foot on Maryland was called Lord Baltimore in
    1632. He died in 1675.

  • The Maryland flag contains the family crest of
    the Calvert and Crossland families. Maryland was
    founded as an English colony in 1634 by Cecil
    Cavert the second Lord Baltimore. The black and
    gold designs belong to the Calver family. The red
    and white design belongs to the Crossland family.
    Flag adopted 1904.

Famous Person
  • Rachel Carson was born in Pennsylvania and
    lived much of her life in Maryland. Her 1962
    book, Silent Spring, about the long term effects
    of pesticides, helped launch the modern
    environments movement. She was the most eloquent
    spoken person for conservation of our time.

  • The history of Maryland included only Native
    Americans until Europeans, starting with John
    Cabot in 1498, began exploring the area The first
    settlements came in 1645 when the English arrived
    in numbers and created a permanent colony. In
    1776, during the American Revolution, Maryland
    became a state in the United States. It was a
    slave state with some Confederate sympathies, but
    remained in the Union during the American Civil
    War.
