As the philanthropic arm of the AMA, the AMA
Foundation works to advance the health care of
America and the medical profession. Through
partnerships with the AMA, the AMA Alliance,
corporations and other organizations, the AMA
Foundation develops and supports meaningful
programs in medical education, public health and
research.
Mission of the Alliance AMA Foundation Committee
To support and promote the programs of the AMA
Foundation, educate members to the importance of
and need for AMA Foundation programs, and to
provide program assistance on fund-raising for
AMA Foundation to state and county Alliance
leaders and members.

AMA Foundation History

• 1950 The AMA establishes the American Medical
  Education Foundation (AMEF) in 1950 to raise
  money for the countrys struggling medical
  schools.
• 1955 The Foundation forges its partnership with
  the AMA Auxiliary.
• 1962 AMEF extends its support to aspiring
  doctors by establishing the Student Loan
  Guarantee Program. The SLGP provided low-cost
  loans to medical students, interns and residents.
• AMEF merged with the American Medical Research
  Foundation (founded in 1957 to support research
  programs throughout the country) to become the
  AMA Education and Research Foundation, or
  AMA-ERF.
• 1983 To strengthen its efforts in medical
  education, the AMA-ERF establishes the Medical
  Student Assistance Program (now named the
  Scholars Fund).
• 1998 Community service becomes an added focus,
  supporting its members meaningful pursuits on a
  local and national level. Spurred by this new
  development, the AMA-ERF was renamed as the AMA
  Foundation, the Web site was launched, programs
  were enhanced, and a solid long-term strategy was
  forged.
