WISE
  • What is WISE
  • WISE is the Wyoming Integrated Statewide
    Education Data system.
  • It is founded in the use of SIF/CSV for vertical
    reporting and SIF for horizontal
    interoperability.
  • It utilizes the ESP State Report Manager (SRM)
    for vertical state reporting
  • It encompasses not only our data management
system but a portion of longitudinal data, as
well as the Wyoming Transcript Center (WTC) for
eTranscripts, Unique ID for student identifiers
called WISER IDs, and much more.

5
SIF CSV Co-Existence
  • When implementing SIF in a statewide environment
the tendency to feel as if it has to be all SIF,
    is nothing but a misconception
  • There are actually 3 ways districts can submit

6
SIF CSV Co-Existence
  • All SIF
  • All CSV
  • Partial SIF and partial CSV
  • Districts run SIF to pull the data that they can.
They then download their data to a CSV file and
make the necessary changes or additions. They
then load their final data to the state as a CSV
    file

7
Wyomings SIF/CSV Experience
  • Generally in Wyoming when we implement a new
    collection to our WISE System
  • All districts will submit using CSV
  • The 2nd time we do the collection we will start
setting up districts that are SIF enabled to
    submit their data thru SIF

8
Wyomings SIF/CSV Experience
  • February 2006 1st SIF Collection
  • 8 submitted with SIF files
  • 92 submitted using CSV files
  • April 2006
  • 17 submitted using SIF files
  • 83 submitted using CSV files
  • This collection only included student
    demographics. Which involved significantly fewer
    SIF data objects.
  • October 2006
  • 10 submitted with SIF files
  • 90 submitted using CSV files

9
Wyomings SIF/CSV Experience
  • January 2007
  • 31 submitted with SIF files
  • 69 submitted using CSV files
  • April 2007
  • 25 submitted with SIF files
  • 75 submitted using CSV files

10
Transfer from CSV to SIFGradually to reduce
burden and cost.
11
Wyomings Experience with School Districts
12
District Experience
  • District were use to filling in a form that the
    WDE provided them
  • Excel
  • Web Application
  • Now they are responsible for creating their own
    CSV file

13
District Experience
  • Issues with creating csv files
  • Not knowing how to set up their file
  • Allowable values
  • Formatting
  • Not knowing how to save as a csv file

14
District Experience
  • What did WDE do to assist districts?
  • Offered trainings in person and over our WEN
    video system
  • Many, many hours on the phone walking districts
    through the process step-by-step
  • Made sure staff were available to answer
    questions during the collection window

15
How is it now?
  • GREAT!
  • We have 5 other collections in the WISE system
that districts have submitted using csv files
  • Understand how to set them up and submit them
  • Know what valid values and formats are
