micheal owens injury
Michael Owen will miss the rest of the World Cup
after tearing the anterior cruciate ligament in
his right knee.
The England striker was injured Tuesday in the
second minute of his team's 2-2 draw with Sweden
in Cologne.
As soon as it happened, I knew I was in trouble,"
said Owen. "It was a major disappointment to pick
up the injury so early in the game."
The 26-year-old Owen broke a bone in his right
foot on Dec. 31 and returned just last month.
His latest injury means Wayne Rooney's fitness
has now become crucial for England. The
Manchester United striker started his first game
since breaking his foot on April 29 and lasted 69
minutes against Sweden.

england v sweden
It was a game that they should have won - they
would have done so but for apalling defending
from crosses.Michael Owen also suffered a
nasty-looking injury in the first minute. On the
positive side, Joe Cole's opener ten minutes
before half time was an absolute screamer. He
volleyed home from 35 yards following a
corner. In the second half though, England
suddenly forgot how to defend. Marcus Allback
flicked in a near post corner whilst unmarked,
then Freddy Ljungberg almost repeated the feat
from the other side of the pitch.

england v ecudor
Around 117 England soccer fans have been released
from custody in Stuttgart following clashes with
German supporters over the weekend.
Another 419 fans - 400 English, 14 German and
five others - were held on Saturday night but
were all freed by Sunday morning, apart from two
England fans, as there were too many to be
processed without compromising their human rights.
Two Britons, a 24-year-old and a 27-year-old, one
accused of assault, the other resisting arrest,
are still in custody. Earlier, ten left a prison
in the suburb of Stammheim. Some covered their
faces while one asked reporters "Are we still in
Stuttgart?"
A 25-year-old from Newcastle, who refused to give
his name, said "I watched a match in the
fan-fest then saw England fans singing on the
steps. I went up to join in then suddenly there
were police everywhere

Sven-Goran Eriksson has insisted that his
misfiring England stars will step up another gear
when they face Portugal in the World Cup
quarter-finals in Gelsenkirchen on Saturday.
A trademark David Beckham free-kick on the hour
saw England book their place in the last eight in
Germany with a 1-0 win over Ecuador, despite
another lacklustre performance in searing heat in
Stuttgart. Beckham, who admitted after the game
he had been feeling ill before kick-off, was
suffering from dehydration and was sick on the
pitch, minutes after becoming the first England
player to score in three successive World Cup
finals.

the football nightmare
Police are investigating after England flags were
torn from a house and burned in Stonehaven.
Alexander Clark was flying the three flags in
the Aberdeenshire town in support of England in
the World Cup
The large flags had been hanging from the house
in Newbigging Drive since the beginning of the
tournament but disappeared overnight on Friday.
It came after a man was assaulted in Aberdeen
last week while wearing an England football
shirt.
Mr Clark, 45, originally from Stoke-on-Trent, has
lived in Stonehaven for many years, and said "I
am really angry about it. "I can't point fingers
but this is obviously anti-English. "I spend my
money on football memorabilia and for someone to
go and whip down the flags is awful." Grampian
Police confirmed "There is a complaint that
flags were stolen and thereafter set alight in
Stonehaven. "We don't know what the motive was
behind that but we are investigating the
circumstances."

england's win
England 1 Ecuador 0 Having come here 18 years
ago and lost a game they dominated against an
Irish side they clearly expected to beat,
England's result on their return to the
Gottlieb-Daimler stadium was at least a little
bit more satisfactory. But oh how their many
supporters must have wished there was even a hint
of the passion in this game that they had shown
against the Republic back in 1988
Instead, they brought those whose spirits had
been sent soaring by Saturday's captivating start
to the knock-out stages of this competition down
to earth with a thud. In a terribly poor game
they were the better of two distinctly
mediocre-looking sides with David Beckham's 17th
goal in 93 appearances for his country proving
enough for victory in the end.
13
the goal that got england through
England's World Cup stars have jumped to the
defence of captain David Beckham after he
answered critics with the winning goal against
Ecuador. Ex-internationals Sir Geoff Hurst and
Terry Butcher led calls for Beckham to be axed,
but his free-kick sealed a quarter-final tie
against Portugal. Goalkeeper Paul Robinson said
"Becks is different class. World class. "We need
him. He is so important. Becks has shown again
that he scores and makes vital goals for
England."
14
The heart and soul of Sven-Goran Eriksson's side,
Steven Gerrard embodies all the qualities which
make England fans so passionate about the
national team. The Liverpool midfielder enjoyed
talismanic status early on in his England career
as it was not until his 22nd cap that he suffered
his first international defeat, coincidentally
whilst captaining the side for the first time.
15
england v portugal
JACK McConnell has refused to say who he will be
supporting in Saturday's World Cup quarter-final
match between England and Portugal - after being
heavily criticised for backing England's
opponents in earlier ties. The First Minister
was berated by politicians and football fans
south of the Border when he backed Trinidad and
Tobago in the first round and then Ecuador.
Yesterday, the First Minister said he would not
"express a preference". He said "I have made it
clear from the very beginning of the World Cup
that should the couple of minor teams I mentioned
not make it to the second round, I had no
intention of expressing any preference for any
game."

beckham comes face 2 face with the argentina
referee
The England captain, David Beckham, will come
face-to-face with the Argentinian referee who cut
short his involvement in the infamous 2000 Fifa
World Club Championship with a red card when
England kick off against Portugal on Saturday.
Horacio Elizondo showed Beckham a straight red
for a reckless thigh-high challenge on Joe Milian
during Manchester United's 1-1 draw with Mexican
club side Necaxa, and the dismissal marked the
low point of a disastrous competition for United.

injury in Thursday's England training session
ahead of Saturday's World Cup quarter final with
Portugal. The Manchester United defender trained
for the first time on Wednesday since suffering
the setback a fortnight ago in the final session
before the group match with Trinidad and Tobago.
