Title: Sponsorship

1
Sponsorship
2
  • Without sponsorship, many athletes couldnt
    carry on with their sport.

3
What is it?
  • It is where a business provides support for a
    team or individual (usually financial)
  • It is everywhere you look at big events.

4
Why Sponsor Sport?
  • Advantages to sponsor
  • It has a healthy positive image.
  • Sponsorship is tax deductible (dont have to pay
    tax on money donated).
  • TV sports are seen by millions.
  • When a local team is sponsored, there is good
    will in the community.
  • A sponsor may get the best seats or free tickets
    to events.

5
  • Disadvantages to sponsor
  • The sponsor expects the athlete to behave well/
(7UP - Roy Keane in World Cup)
  • The sponsor hopes that the team/athlete will do
    well.
  • Both of these are out of the sponsors control.

6
Forms of Sponsorship
  • Sport Barclaycard Premiership
  • Single Event Flora London Marathon
  • Individual David Beckham M S, Pepsi, etc.
  • Sponsorship is not always financial-
  • Could be given a car
  • Clothing
  • Food company may give food
  • Scholarships to centres of excellence.

7
Benefits to Sport
  • Staging an event is very expensive (Olympics) and
    sponsorship is essential.
  • It helps talented athletes train when they would
not be able to with a full-time job.
  • For top athletes, it can be very lucrative. This
is useful as their careers may be short.

8
Drawbacks for Sport
  • Deals only last for a certain time and does not
    give a team/player long-term security.
  • A sponsor may be bad for a sports image.
Tabacco/alcohol sponsorship is now not permitted
    in some countries (F1)
  • Sponsors now dictate timings of matches
    (Premiership Football)
  • Teams/athletes may be exploited by sponsors and
their performances may suffer (David Beckham).
