2Welcome to ICPC and IHHC
.
- On behalf of the Organizing Committee,
I welcome all of you to Osaka for The 5th
International Conference on Preventive
Cardiology. The Scientific Program Committee has
put together an outstanding program under the
theme of "Practicing Prevention for the 21st
Century," which we have chosen to commemorate the
opening of a new century.
Because of changes taking place in
lifestyles and the public health environment,
cardiovascular disease has become a major public
health problem in most developed and developing
countries. Recent extensions in life spans in
many countries have also caused cardiovascular
disease to become more prevalent. With this
background, it is expected that making progress
in geriatric medicine and in controlling
cardiovascular disease will be one of the most
important tasks for public health professionals,
clinicians and research scientists in the 21st
century. We hope that your
participation will make the conference very
successful and enjoyable

8Cardiovascular Disease in the Asia-Pacific
Region Determinants of the Burden of
DiseaseAsia Pacific Cohort Studies Collaboration
.
- Lack of reliable data about the age-specific
associations of "established" determinants and
CVD in Asia Pacific region. - Meta-analysis of prospective observational
studies in this region was performed. - Hazard ratios were estimated by using Coxs
proportional hazard models, in which age, sex,
and study center were considered as the primary
confounders other potential confounders were
additionally considered in the secondary
analyses. - Size and shape of BP, cholesterol, BMI and
diabetes associations with CVD were clarified. - Overall, associations are steeper in younger than
in older age groups. - Reduction in risk factors levels should reduce
rates of CVD in this region. - Results support establishment of population-wide
programs of risk factors reduction.

- Studies included in the APCSC were
identified by database searches, personal
contacts, etc., in the Asia-Pacific region. At
least information about age, sex, blood pressure,
and cause of death were available with a 5000
person-years follow-up for each study. Hazard
ratios were estimated by using Coxs proportional
models, in which age, sex, and study centre were
considered as primary confounders other
potential confounders were additionally
considered in the secondary analyses the
outcomes were fatal and fatal/nonfatal events
sub-group analyses were conducted basically by
fitting interaction terms. The effect of
regression dilution bias was corrected by the
methods of MacMahon/Peto and Rosner.

13Sightseeing Osaka -- Osaka Castle
.
- In 1583, Toyotomi Hideyoshi succeeded
in the campaign to unite the entire country, and
seized control of Osaka. He began building a
large-scale castle, and the result was the
magnificent Osaka Castle. However, during the
Summer War of 1615, some 17 years after
Hideyoshi's death, Osaka Castle was completely
destroyed by fire. In 1931, the Main Tower was
rebuilt in accordance with the wishes of the
citizens of Osaka, and Large-scale repairs were
completed in 1997. The reborn Main Tower,
illuminated both inside and outside, once again
shines as the symbol of Osaka. - Osaka Castle is nearest to the station
of Osaka-jo koen, JR Osaka Loop Line.
