Ciprofloxacin
  • Commonly called Cipro
  • Used to treat bacterial infections
  • Used to kill Neisseria Meningitidis, the bacteria
    responsible for FLW cases
  • Used to stop the healthy carrier state of
individuals to decrease the spread and the chance
    of new meningitis cases

3
Who Should Take Cipro (or Rifampin or
Rocephin) NOW?
  • Your medical staff has determined that a specific
sub-population of FLW may be at higher risk for
disease and may have more healthy carriers of
    this bacteria

4
Why take Cipro if Ive already been vaccinated??
  • Vaccine builds immunity, in other words, you are
better able to fight the bug
  • Ciprofloxacin kills the bacteria and stops the
    healthy carrier state
  • Reduces the risk of spread and new meningitis
    cases
  • Rocephin or Rifampin can also be used to stop the
    healthy carrier state

5
What if you are pregnant?
  • Rocephin is preferred to Ciprofloxacin because of
unknown but potential harm to unborn child
  • TELL THE MEDICAL TEAM IF YOU ARE ALLERGIC TO
PENICILLIN BEFORE GETTING SHOT OF ROCEPHIN

6
Who should not take Cipro?
  • Tell medical team if you have had severe or life
    threatening reaction to any medication
  • Allergic to
  • Ciprofloxacin (Cipro)
  • Levofloxacin (Levoquin)
  • Norfloxacin (Noroxin)
  • Other fluoroquinolone (floxacin)

7
Why Ciprofloxacin?
  • Ciprofloxacin is one of three drugs, the others
are Rocephin and Rifampin, that are recommended
for killing this bacteria and therefore stopping
    the healthy carrier state

8
How to Use Cipro
  • Take medication 12 hours apart
  • May be taken with or without food
  • Drink plenty of fluids
  • Increases sensitivity to sunlight
