In the beginning
  • there was print and life was easy.
  • Then in 1994 online journals appeared.
  • Offered on a free with print basis
  • Basic licence, based on academic usage
  • Access via username and password, consecutive
    users. Later IP recognition came into use.
  • Aggregator platforms such as Catchword and agents
    own systems.
  • User demands and expectations increased

The current picture
  • The number of titles with an online format
    increasing.
  • Online access still available on a free with
    print basis but also online only subscriptions.
  • Pricing structure for online only is on average
    90 of print fees.
  • VAT still charged against online subscriptions
  • Majority of licences still written with academic
    use in mind
  • Bewildering variety of different policies in use
  • Libraries still not ready to get rid of print
    completely, but other libraries threatened with
    closure with a view to going online only.

Licences
  • Many different types of licences are in use.
  • Publishers approach licence administration in
    different ways
  • Publishers may not be able to switch on access or
    invoice before the return of a licence

Multi-Site Access
  • Publishers licences are set up for single site
    usage only.
  • Definition of single sites do vary so check
    licences carefully.
  • Multi-sited customers
  • Academic institutions regarded as one site
    regardless of number of campuses
  • Government libraries based on 2 or more sites
    with in UK are multi-sited
  • Corporate libraries based on 2 or more sites
    within UK, Europe or Globally are multi-sited.
  • If you are multi-sited but dont let the
    publisher know you are in breach of your licence.

Multi-Site Access
  • Check licences to see if the publisher has
    defined your set up as a single site.
  • Approach publishers with full address details of
    your sites, number of Full Time Equivalents
    (FTEs)
  • Publisher will advise if you need to pay
    additional
  • Negotiate with publisher on price
  • Negotiate with publisher on licence clauses if
    necessary
  • Order placing

  • Access to content free of charge to all
