ABSTRACT
  • The purpose of this lab is to test the effect
that light bulbs of different power have on plant
growth. If forty watt light bulbs are used to
provide light for a plant, then the plant will
grow very little. If one hundred watt light bulbs
are used to provide light for a plant, then the
plant will grow moderately. If one hundred and
fifty watt light bulbs are used to provide lights
for plant, then the plant will grow significantly
but not as much as a plant put to receive light
from the sun. If the sun is used to provide light
for a plant, then the plant will grow even more.
In this experiment I will take four pots and fill
them with soil. Then I will plant five seeds of
the same kind in each pot. I will then place the
different light bulbs on top of three of the
    plants. Continued

ABSTRACT
  • Each of the three plants meant to receive
artificial light will have a different watt light
bulb above it. The last plant will be left
indoors, near a window, to receive light from the
sun. The plants will be kept apart from each
other to make sure that the light meant to be
received by one will not be received by the other
as well. I will place the lamps, for the plants
meant to be receiving artificial light, the same
distance from the plants on all of the three
pots. I will record observations daily at four
oclock P.M. and at nine oclock P.M. In addition
I will water the plants with the same amount of
tap water everyday. After fourteen days of
observations I will analyze my data and draw my
conclusions. My experiment will be a research and
field test. My data will be recorded into a chart.

BACKGROUND
  • Poor watering and incorrect lighting are two of
the most common causes of houseplant death.
Plants respond to different aspects of light, its
intensity, duration, and quality. The best
quality light is natural daylight and wherever
possible plants should be placed close enough to
a natural source of light for healthy growth.
Artificial lighting can be beneficial in the
winter when day length and light intensity
decrease. It is used to increase day length in
winter resulting in things such as flowering. The
best lights to choose are those that produce the
highest light levels. Intensity depends on the
type of light and the distance of the plant to
    the light source. Continued

5
BACKGROUND
  • Light intensity falls dramatically from windows
during the winter. Intensity can be determined
with a photographic light meter. Light has an
accumulative effect in plants. With shorter day
length in the winter the total amount of light
received is significantly reduced. Day length
also has an effect on functions such as
    flowering.

PURPOSE
  • The purpose of this lab is to test the effect
that light bulbs of different power have on plant
    growth.

HYPOTHESES
  • If forty watt light bulbs are used to provide
light for a plant, then the plant will grow very
    little.
  • If one hundred watt light bulbs are used to
provide light for a plant, then the plant will
    grow moderately.
  • If one hundred and fifty watt light bulbs are
used to provide light for a plant, then the plant
will grow significantly, but not as much as a
plant put to receive light from the sun.
  • If the sun is used to provide light for a plant,
then the plant will grow even more.

MATERIALS
  • Four pots
  • Twenty seeds
  • Soil
  • Three lamps
  • Forty watt light bulb
  • One hundred watt light bulb
  • One hundred and fifty watt light bulb
  • Water
  • Pencil
  • Paper

9
PROCEDURE
  • Gather materials.
  • Read over procedure.
  • Fill four pots with soil.
  • Plant five seeds of the same kind in each pot.
  • Place different watt light bulbs on top of three
    pots.
  • Leave last pot indoors next to a window to
    receive sunlight.
  • Keep plants apart from each other so that light
meant to be received by one will not be received
    by the other.
  • Make sure light bulbs are equally distanced from
the three pots meant to receive artificial light.
  • Form hypothesis.
  • Observe daily.
  • Analyze results.
  • Draw conclusions.
