Title: Workshop Three
1Workshop Three
- Newham Primary Learning Network
- 2006-2007
- Gifted Talented Mathematics
- Year 5
2Our third workshop was on Wednesday 15 November
at Kensington School.
3Our workshop was in two parts
- In the first part we met
- Liz Pumfrey
- from the
- University of Cambridge
- Millennium Maths Project
- nrich
- Liz had come to introduce us to
- some of the challenging and fun
- maths games and activities on
- www.nrich.maths.org
4Our first problem combined maths with music. We
had to copy a rhythm that Liz started clap,
clap, click, clap, clap click
5Liz gradually made the rhythms more difficult.
- We soon realised that we could write down
the rhythms using symbols. - Once we started recording the rhythms in this
way we could see that they formed number patterns.
6The more complicated the rhythms became, the
harder the number patterns were to predict.Liz
told us that we can explore this problem further
on the nrich website
7The next problem Liz showed us was called Beat
the Computer
- We had to beat the computer to reach a total
of exactly 23. - We had to take turns with the computer.
- We could only add, using four digits-
1,2,3,4. - We werent very clever- the computer beat
us every time. -
- We realised that we would have to find some
strategies if we wanted to win. -
8When we practised the adding challenge with a
partner, we started to understand the strategies
we needed to win the game.
9Liz said that was all she had time to show us
today - but that we should use the web-site if we
wanted to try some more maths problems.www.nrich.

10For the second part of the workshop our task was
to design a Theme Park.
11 We had a budget of 500,000 and a list
of measurements and costs. We
had to keep within our budget. We had to
design and draw an accurate plan.
12We had to keep checking that we were following
the instructions correctly AND we had to plan a
brilliant place to visit.
13We had to consider size and position as well as
cost.
14(No Transcript)
15 The problem challenged our maths and thinking
skills
We had to be able to work successfully with large
amounts of money
We had to be able to understand and use
the correct scale for our diagrams.
We had to be able to work cooperatively with a
partner and change our plans when our
calculations went wrong.
16When we had successfully designed our Theme
Park, the next challenge was to work out the
running costs.
17How much does it cost to run a Theme Park?We
thought about this question and came up with lots
of ideas.
18Do some rides cost extra?
How much does it cost to go in?
What is the cost for parking?
We have to run shops, cafes- and keep everywhere
clean- how many staff? How much do we pay them?
19These are the charges we used
Some of us used calculators to work out the
running costs- but others chose not to. They
worked out their calculations in their books.
20Our final task was to calculate what our entry
charge should be- and then work out our profit
and loss.
21Working out profit and loss was the hardest part
of the Theme Park Challenge.
We decided that the price of our tickets would
have to be between 25-30 in order to make a
reasonable profit and not run at a loss
22Thank you Kensington School for arranging such
an excellent workshop. Our next
workshop is a whole day at Selwyn School
on Tuesday 28 November 2006
Our teacher will be Dr Ted Graham, from the
University of Plymouth.
