White-Tailed Deer
  • Odocoileus Virginianus
  • Ruminant animal
  • Native to most of N. America except west coast

Antler
  • Composed of bone covered by skin
  • Growth can be 2 to 3 times as fast as bone
  • Only males
  • Shed in January grown April through June
  • Skin sheds off around September

4
Antler Composition
  • 22 Calcium
  • 11 Phosphorus
  • Bucks can store minerals in skeletal bone to
    transfer to antlers
  • Can lead to osteoporosis-like symptoms

5
Antler Growth Requirements
  • Ca _at_ 0.64 of diet
  • Phosphorus between 0.25 and 0.56 of diet
  • Varying soil concentrations of P
  • Lack of Ca in Soil has no effect
  • Protein is also necessary

6
Deer Diet
  • Very seasonal in Michigan
  • Spring and Fall mostly grasses some fruits in
    fall
  • Summer mostly corn and other farm crops
  • Winter mostly woody vegetation /whatever can be
    foraged

7
Supplementing Minerals
  • Most mineral supplements are illegal to use in
    Michigan
  • Common livestock mineral/salt blocks are
    sufficient for deer
  • Trace mineral requirements are unknown
  • Deer do well on a beef cattle

8
Conclusion
  • Not a lot is known about mineral requirements
  • Not much research has been done due to how well
    deer do on beef feed
  • No practical way to supplement vitamins and
    minerals to wild deer
