2The Two Big Problems with Wireless
2
1
Wifi Vendors agenda today is security and
management. But Teachers and Students want
Wireless that works!
- Wi-Fi signals dont reach where customers
want/need them
The signals are flaky, erratic performance is
inconsistent
3Introducing Ruckus Wireless
- About Ruckus Formed in June 2004
- HQ in Sunnyvale, California with worldwide
presence - 150 employees
- Business We make standards based Wi-Fi simple,
reliable and fast - Shipment 2 million Wi-Fi systems deployed with
Ruckus technology
4Ruckus Wireless and Education
- Recent Education Wins in UK
-
5Age 11-18 mixed community school employing more
than 60 teachers, and with around 900 pupils.
It soon became clear that the existing consumer
wireless network (provided by NETGEAR) was not up
to the job The solution was provided by Ruckus
gold partner, Net-Ctrl using Ruckus Zonedirector
and 31 Zoneflex APs Being able to trial the
solution was a real bonus as it meant we were 100
percent confident with what we were buying, Adam
Durrant, network manager at Deben High School.
The Ruckus kit worked amazingly on the open
day everyone who needed to could access the
network, and all at the same time without sending
it into overdrive. After this, we not only knew
exactly what we were getting with Ruckus, but we
also knew it could definitely cope with the
schools demands as we introduce more and more
laptops. Adam Durrant, network manager at Deben
High School.

8Ruckus Smart Wi-Fi Technologies
BeamFlex
Self-learning, RF Beam Steering smart antenna
- Extends Wireless Range Coverage up to 2x
- Improves Performance Reliability
- Rejects Interference
9BeamFlex Antenna Advantages
- Omni-directional antenna
- Cannot control interference to neighbouring APs
or multipath phasing - Have no interference rejection
- Make bad RF neighbors
- BeamFlex 12 element smart antenna
- Like a torch, beam-steering focuses the energy
ensuring multipath arrives in phase and provides
maximum signal density and therefore extended
range and superior performance - Horizontally and vertically polarised elements
offer 4000 unique antenna patterns automatically
selected on a per packet/per client basis - Attenuate interference from adjacent APs, clients
and other RF sources - Cause significantly less interference to adjacent
APs
10BeamFlex in Action
- BeamFlex antenna directs Wi-Fi signals to clients
Metal Wall
- Automatically adapts to moves, adds and changes
ZoneFlex AP
- Automatically rejects Interference
- Steers signals around impenetrable obstacles
- BeamFlex antennas make good RF neighbors
11How BeamFlex does it
Angles where signal is improved
Angles from which interference is rejected
12Smart Antennas use power effectively

13SmartMesh Technology for Education
- Obviates Ethernet to every AP
- Plug APs into power source and walk away
- Automatic topology maximizes performance and
resiliency - 802.11n mitigates mesh bandwidth tax
- BeamFlex inherent advantages for wireless mesh
- Ultra reliable AP-AP link with BeamFlex dual-end
- Extended range means fewer hops, less overhead
- Per-packet signal path selection minimizes
self-interference - Auto-adaptation reduces OPEX associated with
detailed RF planning, antenna testing/tuning,
human errors, etc
14SmartQoS Technology SmartCast
- Ruckus-patented reliable Wi-Fi multicast and QoS
software - Per-user rate limiting
- Enables class-based services
- Per-client traffic queues
- Fair airtime management for mixed 11b/g/n
networks - Precise bandwidth management and prioritization
of voice and video streams - Smart multicast-to-unicast conversion
- Guarantees essential multicast delivery
- Per-packet transmit rate and signal path
optimization critical for high quality video
streaming - Automatic traffic classification for plug-n-play
QoS deployment
15Secure Mobility for Education
- Client authentication and authorization
- L2 and L3 client isolation protects against
- Peer snooping
- DNS/DHCP snooping
- Man-in-the-middle attacks
- Client blacklisting protects against DOS attacks
- Dictionary attack
- Resource drainage/excessive management frames
- Configurable blacklist interval
- L2-L4 ACLs
- Wireless intrusion detection
- Detects and classify rogue APs, evil twins, ad
hoc - networks, neighbor APs
- Email alerts
